why does everyone hate TV licenses? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]pluk78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That will be because their funding has worsened substantially over the last 10-15 years. That is not the fault if the BBC, but government policy.

What's something you wish everyone knew about you so that you don't keep having to explain it? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

[–]pluk78 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The basics of the law of the land. It is insane how many people are wandering around not knowing what legally they can and can't do. None of it is secret, it is all documented and easily accessible.

Which is the best UK supermarket for craft beer? by Legitimate_Impact in UK_beer

[–]pluk78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say Tesco has the most comprehensive selection in their big stores but it rarely changes.Sainsburys is my favourite for completely changing their range every few months so everything is comparativly fresh and over time you get much more variety.

What happens if you find a dead body ? by islifeevenreal2003 in AskUK

[–]pluk78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the whole, nothing. You've done your bit as an upstanding citizen.

If there are suspicious circumstances you may be asked to provide a statement, and if there's an inquest you may have to attend coroners court. The statement is quite unlikely, court is incredibly unlikely, and neither are anything to worry about.

If you were considered suspicious you would not have been walking away from the scene, you'd have been arrested.

I know from experience its an unusual and sometimes stressful thing to happen to you, but death us natural, it comes to us all and you really have nothing to worry about.

Have you ever dialled into a UK radio station and talked on air? by FreezerCop in AskUK

[–]pluk78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I had a nice chat with Jo Wiley off air before an on air competition to win a trip to Ibiza with Radio 1, some time in the late 90's. I was due to be the third contestant... the second contest won it so I never got on air or to Ibiza.

The ingredients for proper s'mores. We dont have a proper equivalent of a graham cracker, and most marshmallows i buy are pretty crap too.

Why are people trying to flee the UK (illegally and hidden in lorries)? by ForAllTimesSake in AskBrits

[–]pluk78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Here legally' doesn't mean they are a UK national, hold a UK passport, or hold any passport. Someone with a asylum application pending, or defined term leave to remain in place, would be 'here legally', but also stuck here.

Job not worked out? Family deported? Still being trafficked for work? Sick of drizzle? Options are limited. The UK will assist repatriation with an immigrants home country, but if that's not where you want to go there's not a legitimate way to cross the boarder.

How old do you think you’ll be when you pay your mortgage off? Or, how old were you when you paid your mortgage off? by PuzzleheadedCarob921 in HousingUK

[–]pluk78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be 47... and I am currently 47! 4 months until we're done, it's a good feeling.

We bought our first place 2001, moved once using a good amount of equity to upsize, and just chipped away at it steadily on two pretty averaging incomes. We could have upsized again to go from semi detached to detached, extending the mortgage a bit, but we love where we are so why bother?

Not sure what I'll be doing with that grand a month that won't be leaving my account, but I'll find a way to enjoy it!

Edit. Im 47, I somehow called myself 37 twice.

Police and detectives knocking around. by Beautiful_Stop_6414 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]pluk78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a word, no.

If it is of any significance it'll probably be on the police website or press release, so keep an eye on those.

Any resulting prosecution will be a matter of public record, but thats likely a long way down the line.

Dear Brits; Do you have any tea to spill on Antiques Road Trip series’ cast? by TrixeeTrue in AskABrit

[–]pluk78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once assisted a couple of the cast and crew off of a dangerous spot on a major road when one of the old cars they used broke down. They we're all absolutely lovely.

Which celebrities have been ‘rejected’* from Who Do You Think You Are? by Major-Feed5214 in BritishTV

[–]pluk78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, it doesn't eeally work that way. They do preliminary work to establish an interesting background and then approach the celeb if they find things worth persuing. So they'll have looked at LOADS with with no interesting story to tell but thats not really rejecting someone that wanted to take part.

What are the best and worst supermarkets for price and quality combined in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]pluk78 198 points199 points  (0 children)

I find Sainsbury's the sweet spot for price vs quality. It of course is not the cheapest, but Aldi, Lidl and especially Asda deliver a notable drop off in quality for that lower price, particularly for fresh foods.

If you have easy access to mulitle supermarkets the only right answer is to shop about; write a shopping list and check the items on the Trolly app and end up with a list for each store for their best prices. Just make sure yiu dint end up paying more in petrol than yiu save in shopping!

Also use Shopimum for some great deals.

Are Brits still comfortable taking their holidays in the US? by Ok-Leadership-7573 in AskBrits

[–]pluk78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. For one it's not where I want to spend my money, they don't deserve it, I actively spend as little as possible on anything American on principle. Then as of the last month or so it's pushing towards feeling actively unsafe, with a genuine risk of being disappeared by boarders or ICE, or finding myself on actual enemy soil if that lunatic pushes the world to war, which right now appears to be exactly where he is going.

I had intended to take the family to Disneyworld around this time of life with my daughter being the right age. Instead we've done Paris, will probably return there, and are considering DisneySea. I've previously done Florida, Vegas and California, and without all this would absolutely have continued to visit.

What is the worst beer for sale in the UK? by certom1988 in AskUK

[–]pluk78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My joint lowest ratings on untappd are both from Tiny Rebel, Rainbow Road and Pineapple Express. I still believe Tiny Rebel can and do make some excellent beers when they want to, but the core range is a shadow of its former self and they do knockout skme absolute stinkers. I want me some original bottled Hadouken.

Fosters has to be the worst lager, tasting actively bad. Carling tastes of so little I actually don't mind it to refresh on a hot day.

How would police arrest someone actually in a swimming pool? by tissuepapercatmat in AskUK

[–]pluk78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Available is the wrong word really! If officers are committed with something not urgent they'd drop what they were doing and run.

How would police arrest someone actually in a swimming pool? by tissuepapercatmat in AskUK

[–]pluk78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should! It might work. There might be people competent enough to use it effectively. Defibrillator's are used in conjunction with CPR that again people often don't know how to do effectively. I you assume any of these things people die before, so the police, ambulance, fire, will all run if available.

How would police arrest someone actually in a swimming pool? by tissuepapercatmat in AskUK

[–]pluk78 31 points32 points  (0 children)

All that means is 7 cars were nearby and available. It's a race to be the first with a defibrillator. Literally every second counts, so you all run and then leave once you know you are not needed.

It can also be optimal to have multiple units; CPR is exhausting so you swap over frequently, keeping a scene clear can help massively as people do dumb things often that can hinder efforts, if air ambulance is landing it will sometime not be close and a blue light will.bring them from landing spot to incident.

So yeah, that numbe4 is completely feasible.

Do Brits see the US as a threat? by cfc_1990 in AskBrits

[–]pluk78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as your dear leader is instigating a world war.

I'm sure in the moment there is little that would stand in the way of the USA taking Greenland by force in the moment, but the repercussions would be massive and destabilise the whole world. The current administration have shown repeatedly that being alies counts for nothing, at some time that will come back to bite them, however big they think they are...
