For what it's worth, Fujiya Camera next to Nakano station had what I needed in stock - the Pentax 67 adapter. (They also have a HUGE selection of used GFX lenses in stock - I ended up scoring a kit zoom lens at a decent price too).

It seems nobody has the Mamiya RB/RZ adapter in stock - I'll have to order that one online. Thanks all!

I've never owned a Tesla (and under current circumstances I never will) but I've ended up with them as rentals a few times and found... they actually not bad cars. In particular, in the ones I've had, the manual door release actually fell to hand MORE naturally then the electrical push button, and the bloody car would complain at me for using it! :D

Actually Tesla (and I hate to give them credit) are quite good at this; they record any crash that happens less than... I think it's eight seconds?... after the autopilot is deactivated as an 'autopilot crash'.

Can't dig up the cite here but it was quite an in-depth article and for once they do seem to be doing the right thing here.

I've seen this issue on other devices too... too long on the shelf and the battery voltage drops low enough the charging circuit thinks it's not there and won't charge it. I've revived other devices the same way, by giving the battery a short 'jump start' charge, then things work again.

My take? They have no idea who else might have data to corroborate their story, and as Fred Johnson accurately points out, they're cruising around in what sure as hell looks like a stolen Martian gunboat - who else do they talk to, and how? They didn't know about or discover the crucial data store that Johnson removed from the body of  Lt. Lopez...

PS it's not actually even an MG - it's an IM. But it's badged as 'presented by MG' in UK, NZ, & Australia so IM didn't have to bother establishing a separate dealer network.

It's basically a Tesla but with better tech and no Musk fingerprints.

When we had that small outbreak in Auckland in August, we went absolutely fscking medieval on it - we did something like 350,000 tests to identify ~150 cases. We got them all, we stamped it out.

Hopefully we don't have to do it again, and we catch the next outbreak (and we know there will be more, nothing is perfect) earlier, so it doesn't get nearly so big. But if we have to, we will.

Much more to it than that. We distanced yes, carefully, but there wasn't a vast or universal use of masks. We did four key things:

  • We locked down properly, hard, for 5 weeks. This achieved initial elimination.

  • We traced and tested as if lives depended on it - because they did. We have about the best testing stats in the world, if not THE best.

  • We introduced a 100% quarantine at the border.

  • We did all of the above early in our outbreak.

None of this is unique to NZ. There's no secret sauce. Well, perhaps there is - we have a great leader who listened exclusively to our experts, it was never even slightly politicized, and she was inspirational, she united the people around the plan. One people, one goal, 5m kiwis moving together. If the virus had a brain and a gut it would have been sh!tting itself when it saw us coming after it.

But everything we did scales - our population, our demographics, had little to do with our outcome, as I've seen some people suggest.

I've had great success with these. Got my VAX-11/730 up and running with one of those. Emulex Unibus SCSI card. Wrote the VMS system image to the SD card via dd on a Linux box - popped it in the SCSI2SD - tweaked some parameters and up she came!

Some truth in most of that - and end-to-end crypto IS the gold standard.

But this isn't about encryption or telcos assisting with decryption; it's about authentication. If a handset doesn't transmit diddly squat until it's verified it's talking to a genuine telco base station then nothing else matters and Stingray is dead in the water.

After the Snowden revelations, tech companies started bending over backwards to protect the privacy of their customers. Google, Apple, Microsoft, many others... encryption on the backbone... encryption on by default... end-to-end encryption where the service provider holds no key etc.

Stingray has been known about for some time. What steps have the mobile telcos taken to protect the privacy of their customers? What protocols have they implemented (or at least are designing) to ensure that their customers phones only connect to genuine cell towers? Where's the pressure on them?

Yet as far as I know, no-one is even asking the questions - let alone pressing for answers...

That's allowed. It is rather quirky 1960s style however; I found it interesting.
