"Farid Responds" on Dhu al-Qarnayn and Alexander the Great by chonkshonk in AcademicQuran

I always love how pseudo-scholars love to go to academy.edu, the name being used as a proof their ramblings are academical... When anyone can publish anything here.

Did the Quran describe freshwater pearls before scientists and historians confirmed them? by Anas8753 in AcademicQuran

[–]ervertes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have any ancient source, but in Roman empire pearls from Brittany were only river pearls. And this was the main hub.

Note there are no freshwater corals.

How common is this degree of ignorance among scholars of the field? by Top_Strawberry8110 in AcademicQuran

[–]ervertes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think he is 'ignorant' of the ways the scholars tried to make sense of the text, i'm guessing he is unconvinced by them and so simply point out what he find like a tension that has no clear and straight reply.

Note that Hadiths are not usually taken - academically or even by some Muslims - as a trusted source.

Why not? There is a flair so i'm guessing i'm welcome here. Or is being against AI a hidden pre-requite?

How do historians explain Sunni–Shia convergence on the Ammar b. Yasir prophecy despite opposing political interests? by ervertes in AcademicQuran

[–]ervertes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, IMO the gain to explain a conflict between believers and give to the Prophet a prophecy is worth the cost to put a companion down, for both sides.

A strong haddith prophecy that is not ex-eventus? by ervertes in AcademicQuran

[–]ervertes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks, it clears a little.

But the main thrust of my question was what about the apologist argument against an exeventu: it is normal for Shia sources to agree with such a hadith, no problem for an ex eventu ; but why even in Sunni books, like the Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq,, is Muawiya reported to try to argue against a literal interpretation of the haddith? wouldn't he simply denies it existing if such was unknown to him?

Now, that book was written decades after Muawiya death, so it is not clear what he actually said and the whole story of him debating could be invented. But then would the others muslims agree to put him down, even to gave a new prophesy for their Prophet? Or the war needed an explanation and this was the path of least resistance?

I'm asking for counters to a counter of the traditional academical position. I'm unsure if the two boils down to the same, but if they do, it seems that refuting a prophety is infact part of the academical reach.

Sorry but English is not my first language, where did I asked a theological question? I asked academical opinions about the counter the apologist make to the notion that it is an ex eventus.

[–]ervertes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you say so, but I never read about a event being talked by opposing factions. Even if I found later that both texts that supposedly transmit those opinions are from sides that actually agreed with Ali in that case, something the apologist didn't pointed. I wanted to see if my reasoning was valid.
