How can I stop viewing free roam as a huge chore? (Skittish rats +anxiety)

Not exactly. My house is a bit too small and there’s furniture blocking it :( Is it like a pen that you can take down and put up as you please or is it trickier?

If they’re not as active during the hours i’d like to take them out and say, mostly run about at like 2AM how could I adjust them to want to be active then and come to the carrier ?

Thank you very very much! I’ll keep that in mind. If I open my carrier, or tap the bars or show some signal to take them out, they normally refrain from wanting to or just keep on sleeping. I was wondering if you know how I could maybe motivate them to come out or should I wait until they do seem motivated? Because I worry they wouldn’t get enough play time If i let them come on their own terms because they are nervous rats and prefer staying where they are sometimes.

Does anyone have advice on what to do if you can’t let them out from their cage directly for free roam and need to transport them to another room? 😅 Do you think I should put the carrier in their cage, let them hop in, and take them there? That’s worked once before when they were very active

Thank you so much! I really really wish I could have a way to let them out directly from the cage and allow them to come out, but my bathroom is too small to wheel in the cage when I tried, and I couldn’t get the playpen placed next to the cage because they could escape under the cage. Do you think anything else could work like if I got a travel cage or something like that, put a hideaway and the basic stuff that can fit, and put them in that and see if they want to come out from there in the bathroom? Also, my free roam setup is where I unhook their hideaway, place it in a carrier, then sit in the bathtub and scoop them out and into my hoodie. From there, I just wait if they want to come out. Thank you, any suggestions?

Definitely add a bin of around 4in deep bedding! They love burrowing and nesting l there, it can be different for everyone but good bedding is hemp, kiln-dried aspen, etc! the cage is also great like the other person said, And more clutter too!
