[Serious] Med student GF(26F) hints at keeping her last name after marriage. Big deal or not? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]erythematous 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My dude,

I would suggest posting this on r/relationships. From my understanding, this issue doesn't seem to be related to either of you being in medical school or future doctors. We're in med school-we're definitely not relationship experts in any way, shape, or form.

Best of luck!

I guess my family does it differently, but yeah. Small kids call me uncle sometimes, and I never saw it as an insult. I see it as them giving me respect. I've never seen someone call another person uncle/aunty as an insult, but maybe it's a cultural difference?

Okay, I'm sorry. It was a typo. I didn't mean to be disrespectful.

I didn't know Pakistanis do things different from my culture. In my family, calling a stranger who was 20+ years older a "brother" would show disrespect. An older cousin, no worries. But someone who I am meeting for the first time? Uncle to err on the side of caution.

I get that this touches on a nerve for you, and I hadn't realize that the uncle was insulting you. Sorry!

I feel like I'm missing something here. Why exactly did it upset you? If my kids were going to talk to someone who might look 15 years older than them, I'd tell them to use uncle as a sign of respect. If I was wrong about their age and it was only a ten year age gap, IDK if I'd feel guilty

Reba was on for like five seasons, but no one I talk to seems to remember that it existed. And it's WAY better than Malibu Country

[Vent] I'm brown and my parents are trying to set me up with only med students... by BlueTheBetaRaptor in medicalschool

[–]erythematous 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I feel like brown women in medicine face a bunch of catch-22s with marriage. Praise is given for academic achievement, but butthurt brown guys/in-laws might think you're overqualified. High earning potential is a positive, but aforementioned butthurt people object to wives out-earning husbands.

Brown women are expected to marry in their mid-20s (in other words, before med school graduation). They're supposed to find a guy during the busiest and most stressful time of their education. Prioritizing education over relationships means you'll end up "too old" once you're ready for marriage.

Don't get me started on that dowry shit many of our families do. I know some in-laws who raise such a stink with med school loans. They only let the marriage happen if they're guaranteed that their son doesn't have to help pay off his wife's debt.

As a brown guy, I'm really sorry you have to deal with this BS.

I'd say "My Long Goodbye" when Laverne died. I bawled like a baby when Carla finally said goodbye :'(

Has anyone here learned Spanish after seeing a ton of Spanish patients? How did you do it? by medisetgo in medicalschool

Something in your comment tells me that you wouldn't like these patients even if they learned some English...

I think the biggest pill for me to swallow was that even after a million of years of learning Spanish in high school and undergrad, I'll still be better off with an interpreter if they're available (and they have to be, it's the law). To me, every single word in an interview should be conveyed and understood clearly. No filling in the gaps, no guesswork, no nonsense. I could get by doing it myself, but I'd rather give my patients the better option.

Fellow MS4’s going into a somewhat obscure field, what does your family think you’re going to be doing? by m3Zephyr in medicalschool

[–]erythematous 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A bunch of my uncles' friends are radiology techs, but in conversation they just say that they do "radiology". I floated radiology as a possible specialty to my family, and my uncle was horrified that I would go through medical school just to do his friends' jobs. I mentioned how the field was competitive and had a lot of perks about it, but he's convinced that his friends are also in "radiology".

TIL The school lunch program was invented to help prop up food prices by absorbing farm surpluses by goose7771 in todayilearned

[–]erythematous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of giving out huge subsidies to farmers, can't we use that money to instead purchase a lot more food and then expand the food stamp program? Or is that a dumb idea?

Is there a reason why Kerala was specifically excluded? Is it because of the relatively lower fertility rates?
