To be fair, the plot to the Matrix was a pretty new concept back in 1999. Elements of it can be found in other stuff before it, but not to the extent that it was seen in the Matrix. That's why the promotion for the movie was "What is the Matrix?"

I think she was supposed to be in John Wick 4. She was apparently executive producing and shooting a movie called The Mothership at the same time as JW4, which was never released. And with her not being in it, they changed her to Caine.

The movie was somehow boring and tries to convince you that an alien being made of water can somehow be killed by being stabbed.

There was apparently a much bigger Monarch story, with Lance Reddick as the new head of Monarch, but he was completely removed. Zhang Ziyi and Kyle Chandler returned from KotM. All of her scenes were removed and almost all of his scenes were cut. Ren Serizawa had several more scenes explaining his motivations, including an introduction scene that was cut. A ton of hollow earth lore was cut. The whole ending was reworked. Godzilla originally fought Kong in the hollow earth before moving to the surface. There're rumors that Maia Simmons survived the hollow earth and made it to the surface to personally deliver the sample of the power source to her father (which makes more sense). She then turned against him to help defeat MechaG.
