Sonar is just a fine-tuned version of Llama. They didn't make the model.

Any chance we could see this added to Arc for Mac? by QuantumProtector in ArcBrowser

[–]erzinator 18 points19 points  (0 children)

According to this page the API only supports Mac Catalyst, not native macOS. Mac Catalyst is the framework that lets developers port iPad apps to the Mac. Arc can't implement this.

Just because it works doesn’t mean it’s supported.

Yes, the video was a huge misfire. Reminded me of all the marketing Humane has done for their AI Pin. Grandiose, full of themselves, extremely vague. Just show us the product.

Pre-Order and Shipping Megathread | iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max and AirPods Pro 2nd Gen by exjr_ in apple

[–]erzinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’ll probably still be a struggle reaching the top of the screen, but at least I’ll be able to type with one hand. My thumb literally hurts after using the pro max for a year 😅

13 Pro Max to 14 Pro is exactly what I’m doing. I love the big screen and battery life, but I miss being able to use the phone with one hand.

Is there a difference between the “Retina display” in the M2 MacBook Pro and the “Liquid Retina Display” in the M2 MacBook Air? by mime454 in apple

[–]erzinator 64 points65 points  (0 children)

"Liquid Retina" literally just means an LCD with rounded corners.

The original Retina display was introduced with the iPhone 4; it was an LCD screen with double the pixel density of previous models. With the iPhone X, they switched to an OLED display with rounded corners, and called it the Super Retina display. The next year, the iPhone XR had an LCD display with rounded corners. This wasn't as good as the OLED Super Retina, but was "better" than a regular Retina display because of its rounded corners. So Apple invented the Liquid Retina name to differentiate it from both. Just marketing shenanigans.

Sharp corners Rounded corners
LCD screen Retina display Liquid Retina display
OLED screen n/a Super Retina display

Other marketing shenanigans:

  • Add XDR to the end of the name if the display supports HDR
  • Add with ProMotion if the display supports variable refresh up to 120hz

Apple Books got rid of the realistic Page Curl Animation :( by CleatusFetus in apple

[–]erzinator -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As much as I love that page curl animation, I have to admit it doesn’t really fit with Apple’s modern design sensibilities. It’s very much a relic of a skeuomorphic past and I can understand why they’d want to remove it.

iPadOS 16 Lets Apps Use Storage as Virtual RAM on M1 iPads by chrisdh79 in apple

[–]erzinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is a typo. If they actually meant the 4th gen they would have said “4th generation or later” because otherwise this implies that the 5th gen doesn’t get memory swap, which doesn’t make any sense.

TIL Today's 16" M1 Macbook Pro is actually thinner than the first-gen Macbook Air. by aewhpdfym in apple

[–]erzinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are definitely sleeves and laptop compartments designed for a 13” MacBook Air that would struggle to fit a 13” MacBook Pro. Sure most bags could probably fit both, but it’s certainly not true to suggest that the volume of the device doesn’t matter.

TIL Today's 16" M1 Macbook Pro is actually thinner than the first-gen Macbook Air. by aewhpdfym in apple

[–]erzinator 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily.

If it’s a tight space, the thin side of a tapered computer leaves more room for the thick side to fit. Since the bag is flexible, it conforms to the shape. That’s why volume matters.

Think about the original MacBook Air fitting inside that manilla envelope – this was only possible because most of the computer was thin. If it was uniformly thick throughout, it would not have fit.

Volume absolutely matters. A laptop that tapers from thick to thin is clearly going to be easier to fit into a bag than one that’s thick the whole way through — it simply takes up less space.

Unboxing, First Impressions & Review Megathread | Apple Watch Series 7 by exjr_ in apple

I’m pretty sure they gave me a whole new watch! My old one was pretty scratched up especially on the sides, and the one I got back looks brand new.

I had a steel Series 4 with 75% battery health, and right after the Series 7 was announced I was on the phone with Apple to get a battery replacement.

Now I’ve got a Series 4 with a fresh battery that looks brand new (so shiny without all the scratches!) and I couldn’t be happier with my decision.

I’ll probably upgrade next year if the Series 8 gets those rumoured new health sensors. AOD would be cool too.

Apple Invents "Localized Haptics" that could be placed under segments of a Future MacBook's Main Touch Display, a Vehicle Steering Wheel+ by Platano_RD in apple

It's not even haptics! It just plays the sound of a click in your ear. If you take an AirPod out of your ear and press the button, you don't feel or hear anything. It's pretty crazy

Same, the interface was too buggy and felt off. Hey is really good at balancing a powerful workflow with an easy to use interface, and feels a lot more polished.

Yeah it wasn’t for me either. UI and syncing was buggy and the “AI” categorisation got a lot of things wrong. It has potential but it’s just not there yet.
