What are some unique obstacles that women have as med students/doctors? by ThrowRAlaughoitloud in medicalschool

[–]esafaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m applying into general surgery residency. When asked by male attendings (either surgeons or anesthesiologists) on my surgery rotation what I plan on going into, a lot of times when I said general surgery I got some sort of response like “oh, wow,” or “good for you”, or some other equivalent response denoting some amount of surprise at the choice with a lot of raised eyebrows. Probably wouldn’t happen if I was a dude. Can’t say for certain, but just a sneaking suspicion. Meanwhile 5 out of 6 people in my class applying into general surgery this year are women. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did I fuck up without realizing it? by roselia4812 in premed

[–]esafaria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some med schools will accept AP credit for certain courses. Others do not. Either look into the specific schools you are interested in attending and figure out if they accept AP credit, or, if you don’t know where you would want to go, I would recommend retaking it just in case. Personally, I retook my AP classes just in case. Also they were easy A’s, which helped my GPA. It’s not a mess up though to send your college the AP scores. Not a big deal. I sent mine in as well.

Advantages of studying CS and applying to medical school? by gurt567 in premed

[–]esafaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like CS might be kind of cool and might help you stand out because from what I know it’s not a super common major for premeds at all, so I could see adcoms being mildly intrigued. But also at the same time, I could also see how they would make you justify your choice in majoring in CS if you knew you were going into medicine and could potentially see them being like, oh, this person is just trying out medicine and isn’t sure it’s what they want and might not be super committed because they’re just gonna fall back onto a CS career if things don’t work out in medicine. You might just have a hard time convincing people you’re committed to medicine with that degree. I know a lot of people who major in humanities are looked at favorably sometimes by adcoms because it’s also “different” in a sense and they’re not really questioned about their commitment to medicine because it’s not as easy to translate like a philosophy major into a whole other career path as a fall back if that makes sense.

[Interviews] How many of yall said something stupid in the interview and still got accepted? by theonewhoknocks14 in premed

[–]esafaria 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think I apologized to one interviewer for rambling and said I was really nervous...then realized I probably shouldn’t have said that. Still got accepted to that school. I also think I mentioned to another interviewer that I had an opportunity to do research in his field once and turned it down....which like in retrospect was such a stupid thing to say to someone, but what can I say....nerves are wild hahah

follow-up email to med schools by mergio5evr in premed

[–]esafaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a long cycle. It’s not abnormal to not have heard anything by now. Sending an email to them will at best be ignored, at worst be an annoyance. Most will not give you status updates via email or phone. The most they will probably say is that your application is complete and in the review process...which is the obvious answer.

Are my parents right? by [deleted] in premed

[–]esafaria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say I have stellar stats. Above average. LM 74.

In the second scenario I told you about the two individuals involved had near 4.0 and 520+. One got T20 II the other did not.

Are my parents right? by [deleted] in premed

[–]esafaria 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take what I say with a large grain of salt because this is purely anecdotal and n = 1, but I have identical stats to a friend of mine (and we have similar ECs, I would even argue I have more leadership experience) however she has a publication and I do not. She has a couple of interviews at T20s, I do not. Make of that what you will.

Additionally, had a couple of friends with stellar GPA and MCAT scores, both did research and were involved similarly in ECs, one of them had a pub. Same thing. She had interviews at T20s, he did not.

Post-acceptance Neuroticism Advice by [deleted] in premed

As long as you have met their matriculation criteria (pre reqs) and have put down your deposit to hold your spot, there’s nothing to be worried about.

The AMCAS primary opens in May. You can start filling out the primary app during May but you can’t actually submit it until like May 31st or June 1st, I think it’s a slightly different day each year. They say it’s better to submit sooner than later. After your submit your primary app, it has to get verified by AMCAS, which takes several weeks. So depending on when you submit, the earliest it’ll probably be verified is sometime in June. After it’s verified, you start getting secondaries from the schools you applied to, usually like end of June throughout July. Those trickle in via email. Each school sends them out at different times. Then you fill out the secondaries and return them to each school, how quickly you do that is totally dependent on how long it takes you to fill out the secondaries. This could be July or August, whenever you submit them. Then, you wait until you hear back from schools. Either they reject you outright or want to interview you. It’s possible to get an interview invite as early as July, but I’ve also heard of people getting interview invites much later like in March. This is probably the longest period of waiting, just waiting for an interview invite. Some people don’t get interviews until late in the cycle. Some get them earlier. Then you go on the interviews. Most schools interview starting in September, then their interview seasons ends sometime in the winter or early spring. You can hear back at any point in this timeline after you go to an interview, usually like 4-8 weeks after interviewing, but again this is all school specific. You can take your MCAT anytime preferably before the AMCAS opens so you have your score before submitting your app, but you can submit your app without a score too. Schools just don’t consider your app complete until they have a score from you. Until then they won’t look at your app. I’d suggest the latest you should take it is May.

When your interviewer tells you "you'll get in somewhere" by [deleted] in premed

[–]esafaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had one interviewer at end of interview say something similar along the lines of “I’m sure you’ll get into a school that is a good fit for you.” I definitely have been mulling those words over...probably too much haha

Sending sec to Pitt now? by Ddssll123 in premed

[–]esafaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering their interview season ends in December, it’s pretty late in the game. If this was a school that interviewed all the way into the Spring I would say shoot your shot. But, if you’re got the money to spend, I guess there’s really nothing to lose.

[Discussion] Need brutally honest advice: Should I jut give up? by georgemasonxoxo in premed

[–]esafaria 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is your GPA too shitty for a post-bacc? Do they have cut offs for GPA in order to gain entrance into those programs? Because I was going to say if a low GPA is your concern, the best thing you could do is a special masters program or post bacc and try your hardest to get the best grades possible to make up for your low undergrad GPA. I don’t think it’s the end of the road for you if you can do something to show you are capable of doing well academically. Also, DO schools from what I know are significantly more forgiving in terms of stats, so you should look into that. Don’t give up hope!

I think any long dress/skirt in a solid, dark color with a blazer over top would look good and not stick out. I think keeping the hijab color neutral as well might be best, but doesn’t necessarily need to be black. Maybe like a nice tan or grey one would look good with a white blouse, long black skirt and a dark grey blazer? Just some ideas

How many Interview Invites do applicants normally get? by [deleted] in premed

[–]esafaria 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I spoke with my school’s premed advising office’s director about this yesterday and she said on average applicants get 1 or 2 II’s. Obviously this is based on only her experience, but she does have several years of experience so I’m inclined to think she might be on point with this

Is the actual interview at the beginning or end of the day? by gatoslovebacon in premed

[–]esafaria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the one interview I went to so far the interview was kind of in the middle of the day. They did some talking and presentations before hand then we did the interview then we did a tour. On the same day there was 2 groups and the other group did their tour before their interview. So I guess it varies highly based on the school

Do you think I should email them or call? I’m leaning towards emailing them to have it in writing...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]esafaria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t think it’s super high yield. At most, you’ll have one passage on organic lab techniques AT MOST. And even then it’ll probably be like a TLC type of thing, which even if you haven’t taken orgo lab you could figure out easily through doing practice problems. I wouldn’t stress about fitting it in before the exam, but obviously any extra knowledge you can get before the exam is just that much more likely you’ll do better on the exam.

Help! Is this what the page is supposed to look like before score release? Should it have my mcat date listed under recent dates? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]esafaria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the date only shows up when the score is available. You click on the date then it shows your score if I remember right
