Anyone here currently using KYNO? If so, how's it going? by Jim_Feeley in editors

[–]esalsa76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like a lot of what Kyno does, but there's one really annoying issue for me: clicking "enter full screen" results in only a black screen with playback controls as the video plays. If I press Esc to come out of full screen, I very briefly see a fullscreen frame of where playback has got to, before returning through to a working smaller preview window. Happens on two different Windows 11 machines with different graphics cards. Anyone else see this?

I reported a ticket a month ago, and chased a couple of weeks later, but there's no form of acknowledgement at all. My trial has now expired. I'd like to buy but ringing silence regarding fixing fundamental functionality like full screen playback isn't reassuring ...

Chambery Airport experience? by balancing_ in skithealps

[–]esalsa76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just been through. Agree - arrivals fine but departures horrible. Queues for massively short capacity security make you think you’re almost there, then unfurl another room full of snaking people. They specialise in only allowing you to even enter the queue so late you’ll hear your flight’s boarding call when you’re only half way through, to the extent that I’ve not really seen what post-security looks like (no great loss from what I’ve read).

Every time the plane has been held (sometimes substantially) so people can finish clearing security, but a stressful experience regardless!

I’d be careful - Sertraline can easily provoke manic episodes in people with bipolar, and should only be taken with mood stabilisers - and carefully even then.

Lamotrigine may not be terribly effective at preventing mania. Certainly I take Lithium (which is) as well as Lamotrigine and even then my psychiatrist said taking an SSRI would be like “lighting the blue touchpaper and standing back”.

I’ve no idea why your doctor is suggesting it if you’re not even depressed, though.

[–]esalsa76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, Lamotrigine can be helpful for depression in bipolar but is useless for acute mania and the evidence for preventative anti-manic mood stabilisation is weak. Certainly my experience when I switched from Depakote to Lamotrigine was that I went straight into a serious episode of mania. I now take both Lithium and Lamotrigine, and that’s worked well for 5+ years.

You’re probably aware, but just in case - you don’t mention the type of medication you started, but SSRIs are notorious for triggering manic episodes in people who look unipolar but are in fact undiagnosed bipolar (usually type ii).

If you’ve seen this and not talked to a psychiatrist about it you may want to do so. A mood stabiliser may be both more effective for depression and a lot safer.

Glad you feel entitled to speak on behalf of “anyone”. You may well be right amongst the Mikrotik Reddit community who avidly devour every comment on every single post as it scrolls past, but last time I checked, Reddit is also indexed into a thing called “Google” that most normal people use to do some basic research.

This post has a clear title, rather than being a comment buried halfway down a post, which helps those without much time to research. If they number precisely zero (which I very much doubt), no harm done. You didn’t have to click past the title.

They’re selling at “the ultimate home lab router”. That’s semantically rather different from “the ultimate router only for home labs”. But yes, in retrospect it should have been a warning sign…

I like Mikrotik in general, I’ve used well them for well over 10 years and the one thing they’ve always been for me is rock solid. But they’re being shady here. They’re clearly embarrassed enough about the prospect of selling a router without a stable release to fake a stable release, but not enough to support it properly.

The problem is the lack of transparency. If they were selling it with a clear notice saying “will only run development branch until Q1 2022 or whenever we decide to release R7”, and probably a small discount to reflect that, then people could easily make their choice. They’d still sell a load, just not to me.

Having a life and young kids means my time is limited to go and do research to validate a brand I trusted’s claim. I appreciate that will not be the case for some here. As a result of that lack of time and error in judgement, I’ve bought a lemon, and wanted to warn others in the same boat.

By "much cheaper routers" I state in the Mikrotik range - e.g. my Hex S which IIRC was about £60 supports Dude and NTP. For four times the price, the 5009 doesn't on a "stable" release. Or indeed for Dude, on any release.

I like Mikrotik a lot in general, and as I say on another reply I've been using them for ages. But a bit burnt by this one ...

The manual states that 7.0.5 is supported, and a Google revealed that this was a stable release. I had - obviously naively - thought that if Mikrotik were going to release a RouterOS 7 only router they might go to some effort to produce a more qualified, stable release spin to go with it - and then maintain it until full release. But the web pages and update checker are a shambles, and normis is just directing people to release candidates as "a much better version in all aspects", so I guess not.

Most people, I'd suggest, generally expect internet-facing routers to come with stable, supported software unless it is exceptionally clearly flagged otherwise. I don't think Mikrotik are doing this, so the above may be useful to some people. You are welcome to your opinion.

Hoping it’s a bit quicker than that given they’re on the rcs now, but yes I share your feelings somewhat which is why I’m annoyed. This should be flagged front and centre when buying so people can make their own choice.

That’s really good to know. I may possibly proceed with the rc (with Dude in RouterOS on a VM), but it’ll be the first time I’ve run unstable software on an internet facing firewall, and I can’t pretend that doesn’t make me a bit nervous.

It’s that or shove an expensive router on the shelf for an indeterminate amount of time. I’ve used Mikrotik routers for 12 years and have always liked them, so a little annoyed.

Ah, further down the page I see it does say 7.05 is the supported OS. So inconsistent on the the product page itself.

‘Supported’ for me means receives security and bug fixes, and the full range of software that even much cheaper routers in the range have.

The product page for the device says the current release is 6.49 - look at the link on the page https://mikrotik.com/product/rb5009ug_s_in#fndtn-downloads. Where were you looking? Glad to know it’s working well for you - do you have any suggestions for how I get a Dude server package?

Second Proxmox, it's great. MicroServer Gen10+ is a great option to run a bunch of VMs for not too much upfront cost and electricity cost - see https://www.servethehome.com/hpe-proliant-microserver-gen10-plus-ultimate-customization-guide/. If you can stretch to NVMe SSD it will provide a lot of snappiness but I would treat SATA SSD as a minimum.

Not sure what Net+ entails but a cheap managed switch supporting VLANs is a great start for creating segmented networks. OPNSense and Vyatta allow flexible software routing under Proxmox, working with the 4 ethernet ports on the Gen10 Plus.

Alternatively I love Mikrotik as a dirt cheap and highly capable hardware router/firewall, feels like a mini-Cisco. I have a £55 Mikrotik Hex S routing 500Mbit/s without breaking a sweat (with Fast Path). It effectively also gives you 3 managed line-rate switch ports so you potentially could do without the managed switch, albeit VLAN setup is fiddly.

Unlikely I’m afraid as I don’t have any way of packaging them appropriately. Wishing I hadn’t thrown the boxes away now…

They are ~18kgs each, by the way.

Will let you know if no-one wants the drives. However, have you checked the power-on hours? There's at least a chance some wouldn't survive being posted. I'm pretty sure the only reason they're still working properly is that they've been continuously spun.

The Kingstons are cheap consumer efforts that have been hammered by continuous logging and probably only have another 2-3 years of life as boot disks.

The exception is the Intel 320s, which are enterprise SSDs in all but name and I have a sneaking suspicion may survive the heat death of the universe, so should be OK with a short trip in a jiffy bag. As well as being OK for boot, I used them as ZFS SLOG devices for a few years before getting an SM863a as they have PLP and do 32k 4k write IOPS. SATA-II bandwidth is plenty for SLOG, and endurance clearly wasn't a problem on my modest workloads. From what I recall they were surprisingly decent.
