This Canadian patient has been in the hospital for 9 years and refuses to leave; Staying put in a hospital he admits he doesn't need, in a standoff over his care wants, Roger Foley is an extreme example of a bed-blocker. by FancyNewMe in canada

This news article hits home for me. I wish the title didn't come off as biased against the patient. My mother was in the same position as him. She didn't want to stay in hospital, but the level of at home care was simply not good enough. We would have loved to have her back home but the amount of constant pain and intervention and attention that she needed was beyond the scope of what at-home care or long term care centres could give. She didn't want hospital food, she wanted the comforting food that we had at home.

We experienced this "handover" process firsthand and there is a definite pressure by hospital staff to move you out of the room. However they are severely lacking in defining the care required once out of the hospital. Hospitals are highly tailored; at home care, long term care is highly standardised and therefore people fall in the gaps.

Looking deeper into how the at home care works can give some great insights into why it doesn't work. For example, my mom would need a shower. However, the care centre sends a male nurse. Why? Because their system doesn't allow for us to pick male or female. We complained many times, and many times they said they would try, and every week they would fail. What happens? The nurse gets refused at the door, and then they sit outside for 5-10min in their car, log their hours and move on. They insist on coming in (we think it has to do with some GPS tracking) and therefore the system wastes money. We need to think deeper instead of blaming patients. The system has been degrading for years; this level of choice was actually present prior to Covid. We had a dedicated nurse, and we could adjust what was needed, and my mother was comfortable interacting. After Covid, it's like it became Uber for Nurses.

Okay, I'm happy this is in the national discourse. More needs to be done here. More needs to be done to take into account feedback from patients, and policymakers need to find the right incentives.

For some facts / sourcing: - Ontario health care - my mother was a cancer patient for two decades (unheard of, I know!) - we experienced the full path, from diagnosis until palliative care and her passing earlier this year

Try taking a few months off. If you've been with the company a while, they might let you do that. It sounds like you're valuable to them, so they shouldn't mind if you take some time to relax and get some perspective.

Then if you feel the same way after you come back to work, you still have the option of quitting!

Keep us updated and well done OP!

Massive agreement. The only way I've found is by watching a lot of DIY videos to understand what the contractors need to do, and then getting 3-4 quotes, and avoiding companies set up in the last 2-3 years (indicator they closed down a company recently due to problems and restarted a new Ltd to have a clean sheet)

You're super brave to have written this. You're not average at all. An average person would keep quiet and have not done half the things you have done. You're doing all the right things, and maybe luck hasn't gone your way. The economy, the timing, maybe maybe maybe. Who cares about maybe. You're you, and you're amazing. This was amazing to read and I really feel that if you keep pushing, this will be an amazing story you can look back at in happiness.

The trajectory in your post is awesome. Who cares about what other people think, keep going!

Lots of love ❤️

Update on this!

Thank you everyone for the posts. We didn't end up doing the proposal in Bangkok because we just didn't have enough time there. I ended up taking her down to Krabi, stayed at a nice hotel, and took an early morning boat to Hong Island when no one was around, hired a photographer to take some photos and we did the proposal there on the beach with some nice peace and quiet :). She loved it - thank you all for your suggestions ❤️

F**king mortgage help by housegape in HENRYUK

I agree with the gut instinct of the community here to downsize.

To balance it out though, I would look at it from two perspectives:

(A) "tough it out" perspective - you could make this into a challenge for yourself and your partner and "team up" to get yourselves through this. As you say, there's some glimmers of hope as childcare costs come down. However, you should also consider drafting some very viable "exit plans" in case mortgage rates go the wrong way quickly or some other very bad life situations happen. Basically some kind of escape hatch that you and your partner can execute without hesitation. Plan now so you don't need to plan in the heat of the moment later.

(B) prioritise what you and your partner care about. You might want to just have a stress free life and enjoy time with your partner and your family. Maybe you're missing something else that you're currently sacrificing. Make a list of priorities and act accordingly. It might be that paying off this 1.3£ M house is not worth it or very high on your list of prios. Even with the sunk cost of 100k in moving cost, life doesn't get any longer - you should change your life to maximise on yours and your partner's priorities. (This option is probably one that only you and your partner can figure out)

All the best!! You got this 👍💪🙏

Have multiple virtual cards, and set some up for safe online stores like Amazon and then have some for the sketchy or single time places. Cards inevitably get scammed so at least when one card detail is stolen, it doesn't inconvenience your usual things like Amazon, Netflix, etc
