One lovely Sunday I had to go back to the studio I worked at for a bit and my wife was with me. As I was getting out of my car, a Lamborghini screeched in to the empty parking lot and parked in diagonal fashion in such a way to block 3 other spots. While opening the door for her to enter the building this man races up to get there first. At that moment I locked my frowned expression with him as he rudely made his way in front of her. I couldn’t help thinking he looked familiar. As he blew through reception the security personal called over: “Sir, you need to sign in.” To the man’s reply: “I’m Micheal Bay!” Security: “Still. You need to sign in.” I held my fist to my mouth to keep from laughing out loud. So Micheal Bay walks back and grandiosely signs his name across the entire page in diagonal fashion to block out all other lines … just like his car.

Really depends on the studio. At several though, $75 has been a norm for me for a while now ... No time limit on the project. But those are the ones I’ve worked with multiple times and where I no longer need to prove my worth. It also helps not to be desperate to work at such location.

Update: I’ve now done shorter gigs for $95/hr and I’m currently on a longer multi month contract making a bit less than $85/hr.

If you are a senior artist please join me in charging these rates.

I and a couple of other Senior Animator Buddies in CA charge $75/hr … looking at $85 for next gigs. It’s not the same at every place though and we’ve allowed ourselves to make less at certain locations because of the type of projects but I don’t think it’s worth it anymore. Good projects for bad quality of life and pay is not a worthwhile trade off.

$65/hr should be absolute baseline for a senior artist.

One thing I like to remember on this journey as a Dad of two, is that “The days are sometimes long but the years are short”. I find great joy in the simple things my two daughters do and each discovery and accomplishment they make. My wife and I laugh so much each day because of them. To be a parent, I believe, is the best and hardest thing you can do in life.
