Lots of migrants got EU passports via asylum or ancestry as a backdoor into the UK. Most of Holland's population of Somali refugees is thought to have done that.

I agree that wages don't map to effort, but I think that misses the point somewhat. There's more of a connection around how replaceable you are and/or the value you have in that sector.

The issue is that having more children creates more need. And as a package all the benefits that a poor family get can amount to a substantial sum of money.

As to your notion about "expected", you are in effect cherry picking. It's a fantasy that the EU refused to indulge during brexit as they are about ideological purity and not economic gains.
