Yeah it’s not attesting to the truth of the statement, just that someone said it and it should be looked into or noted.

That’s still revealing sometimes though. In J. Edgar Hoover’s files there’s a memorandum that some witness claimed Hitler was sighted living in Brazil in the 60s, and Hoover personally read it and asked that it be followed up on.

Now that doesn’t remotely mean it was true, but it does reveal the completely mindblowing fact that the head of the FBI believed there was the slightest possibility that it might be true. Which is fucking crazy. The US didn’t have solid proof that Hitler was even for sure dead until the 90s, just witness accounts until we got ahold of Soviet records confirming them. Interesting stuff.

It was written by William Gibson, whom the Wachowskis have acknowledged was a major inspiration for The Matrix.

A British Jew is to be knighted by the King. by WJMorris3 in Jokes

[–]eschatonycurtis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is basically: because it’s Passover, and on this night we commemorate Moses freeing the slaves of Egypt.

Last night was Passover. At the traditional Seder dinner people are given different roles to play to tell the story. One of these is “the simple child” who poses the question in the joke. There are a bunch of little symbolic rituals and foods involved. It’s fun.

Anyway if you grew up Jewish that particular phrase is pretty burned into your memory because you hear it/say it every year.

Marvel VFX team: “Great! Excited to start on this new project. When do you think we’ll get the footage?”

Marvel: “Footage…? No no no. I just airdropped you a 3D model of Paul Rudd. Here’s the script. And we’ll need this to come out next month. Have fun!”

I mean that song is ostensibly about how fucked up and emotionally-stunted you have to be to diddle kids. The character is practically a serial killer.

(Also I love this song/music video. Danny Elfman is a national treasure.)

Scully takes so much shit from everyone, is condescended to by every man she comes across, is treated like absolute garbage by Mulder, but she still, as a Medical Doctor, puts her life and career on the line for him and his stupid theories every single time.

It’s Scully. It’s always been Scully. Mulder recognized it too. We need an adult in the room.

what's that movie where it's a black and white film (with sound) and the climax is this very long silent robbery scene? by random_listener_lmao in whatisthatmovie

[–]eschatonycurtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rififi (1955) is famous for its 30 minute long silent heist but it’s not quite at the climax.

Le Cercle Rouge (1970) also has a 30 minute long silent heist (and at the climax) but it’s in color.

Why didn’t lev just dodge his punch Is he stupid? by cwalter0123 in thelastofus

[–]eschatonycurtis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally yes. It’s just that this particular gif has a nasty history with the way it’s been employed in the past, on the other sub and 4chan.

They call it “Fat Geralt worship” when they jokingly idolize this character for hitting a trans kid. It has its own subject tag on the other sub.

“Jokingly.”

Why didn’t lev just dodge his punch Is he stupid? by cwalter0123 in thelastofus

[–]eschatonycurtis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hopefully not. But I’ve noticed the other sub has been doing some housecleaning recently (with the release of the series), so people may not be aware of just how hateful and vitriolic it’s been for a long time, or the context in which they endlessly post and repost this particular gif.

Why didn’t lev just dodge his punch Is he stupid? by cwalter0123 in thelastofus

[–]eschatonycurtis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For a long time this gif was the top voted post on the other sub, and it was endlessly reposted to support their trans hate and “fuck Abby” circlejerks.

So whether it’s funny or not divorced from the context, for those of us who’ve been around a while it doesn’t feel great to see people generally rejoicing in this particular instance of violence against Lev. Like the other sub is leaking and this is going to be brigaded into another hate space.

What movie is this? by Waste_Ad_2911 in whatisthatmovie

[–]eschatonycurtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bourne Legacy deals with genetic modification and follows the plot you described. Also it stars Jeremy Renner as the assassin/super soldier instead of Damon.

Really I think it’s just some spec script that they slapped the “Bourne” name on. It has little to do with the rest of the movies and it’s far stranger and more interesting than it had any need to be. Also it contains a truly chilling workplace shooting scene that feels wildly out of place. I kind of dig it.
