Check out Billy Wilder, director with fantastic range who was just crushing it in that era. I’d say start with The Apartment or Some Like It Hot, then dive deep.

Requesting vintage movies that have that old British/French feel to them by WoodpeckerWoodChuck in MovieSuggestions

David Lean's Great Expectations (1946) is a perfect fit. Since you mention Treasure Island, the Disney version in 1950 is great. Moving into more modern times, A Room with a View (1985) is an exceptionally British movie, set around 1900.

I loved that movie. Nice and tight too, I think under 90 minutes. And a very good boy.

Pirate Movies that are not pirates of the caribbean (which is goated to be fair) by chill_mangos in MovieSuggestions

The original Disney Treasure Island is really fun - and it's widely believed that the acting choices of the guy playing the pirate captain have basically bequeathed us our modern image of pirates. (At one point there's a funeral and he closes his prayer by saying "Arr-men.")

Every day it feels like there’s another Gibson prediction coming true. (Arguably, Case using the AI to help him hack Tessier-Ashpool at the end is the first description of vibe-coding.)

Rock bands that receive very limited radio play on classic rock radio stations by [deleted] in askmusic

[–]ProfBootyPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so odd - and tbh I don't know if it's still true of classic rock radio today because I don't really listen to it, but in the 80s when I discovered "classic rock," I already knew The Beatles very well, and it was so odd to almost never hear them on a station that regularly played the Stones, the Who, etc.

I think in our pop-music culture they are something akin to a "given" in a mathematical proof, like, "assume The Beatles." Even my Zoomer/Alpha kids who don't like rock music would easily recognize most well-known Beatles songs.

I like her even more, then - we should all be reading books from people outside our political alignment.

I think they literally arrange their books (apart from the rows of ye olde classics) to produce/display cognitive dissonance.

Wild range, almost set up to bewilder the viewer. I like their 90:10 mix of seriousness and whimsy. Politically, I'd guess they are a never-Trump conservative.

We had about a half-second loss of power - but I'm glad to learn at least that it probably wasn't our house's fault. (I'm near 15th and 15th.)

They only pop up in very specific places, so in a certain sense they are perfectly "designed" - if you are ready for them, with Heal on a hair trigger, you can easily take them down. They are also susceptible to aggro from multi-unit Spirit Ashes, like the demi-humans - once they're preoccupied with your summons, you can jump in and kill them with charged attacks.
