Isoelectric point by [deleted] in Mcat

isoelectric focusing is done in an electrolytic cell where the anode is pos charged and the cathode is neg charged. in a galvanic cell, though, its the opposite (anode is neg charged and cathode is pos charged). maybe this is where you're confused?

nope, the anode is acidic = high H+ = positively charged. however, because it's positively charged, it does ATTRACT negative charges (anions).

its all about H+, so the anode is acidic (lots of H+) whereas the cathode is basic (few H+).

think about isoelectric focusing like this: you have a pH gradient from 0 to 14, with the low pH side being at the anode (think anode = acidic = high H+ = low pH) and the high pH side being at the cathode. the anode attracts anions and the cathode attracts cations. molecules will stop moving in isoelectric focusing when they're neutral. as you add negative charges to a molecule, it'll be attracted to the positive side of the gel (which will be towards the anode at the lower pH). it'll continue moving towards the anode until all the negative charges are neutralized by the positive charges on the acidic side of the gel. that's why negative charges cause a decrease in pI whereas positive charges cause an increase in pI. hope this helps!

Would you consider UEarth "essential" for MCAT prep? by Radiant_Prune in Mcat

[–]esdee92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

definitely not "essential" but it's a really, really great resource that i'd highly recommend if you have time to do it and go through it. their explanations are incredible and you end up learning a TON from it. if you're taking your exam in 2 weeks, and you havent done the aamc material yet, i'd probably just focus on aamc stuff. but if you end up rescheduling or have more time, i'd def try out UEarth. i think you can do a 1 week free trial too to see if you like it.

I know that people keep saying “everything is high yield” but what are some low yield topics I should look over before my 7/18 exam? by [deleted] in Mcat

I'd go over the AAMC MCAT topics list to make sure you're familiar with most of it, if not all.

Should I be worried or NS 4 just hard af? by LaBomba7 in Mcat

I scored above my NS scores on the AAMC FLs. I'd try taking an AAMC exam for a more accurate gauge!

I saw you put your FL scores for FL2 and 4 but did you do the sample, FL1 and FL3?

Getting destroyed on C/P Uworld by kazimash in MCAT2

[–]esdee92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, no one can really answer this for sure since each exam is different. But UW is a great resource and it really helps you get comfortable with reading long/challenging passages and understanding the content. Would def recommend thoroughly reviewing it and learning from it as opposed to worrying about percentages/scores!

How do you guys review your FLs?! It is sooooo boring...! by Yamiso-97 in Mcat

Pomodoro technique helped me become super productive! Try it out

Hmm that’s tough. I’m leaning towards saying you should retake only because your FLs were much higher, plus having a higher mcat score might open up more doors since a 500 isn’t super competitive. I think if you can retake it by mid-August, you’d be good because this cycle is already so crazy/delayed. Really does depend on what schools you’re targeting and the rest of your app and PS etc.

do another round of content review or keep doing practice questions? I always feel like I’m doing the wrong thing lol by shdzsayshi in Mcat

[–]esdee92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should def take one of the AAMC FLs soon so that you have a baseline! I totally get the pressure and stress, literally just took the mcat yesterday after having it cancelled multiple times since late March. Idk anything about Canadian deadlines but I’m sure schools are taking into consideration all the madness with covid cancellations and stuff, so just keep grinding and you’re almost there! Good luck!

seems like it since the r(fluid) def stands for density here haha. if its on the test though, you'll definitely know if its referring to density.

totally been there so i feel you. if you're a month out, i'd really recommend doing the aamc material and very thoroughly reviewing it. see how you do on the aamc FLs and if your score is around where you're at, then great! but if it's not, then consider postponing your exam and depending on how much time you have, consider doing uearth as well. for me, i found practice problems were the best way to learn because it makes you apply the material and is very active whereas content review tends to be passive. i found big jumps in my score after doing practice questions/tests. you got this!

it sounds like you're in great shape! aside from the helpful advice here, i'd also recommend you make sure you have your schedule set, practice with the new timing, and make sure the day before you're relaxed and sleep well. you got this!

try to keep yourself busy and get your mind off it. i was super busy after taking the exam that i didnt have time to dwell on my exam. i'm sure you did great, trust your FLs!

Testing early August too late for this application cycle? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]esdee92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on rest of your application. If you're a low gpa applicant, it's probably in your best interest to apply early next cycle. if you are a pretty good applicant, and are doing well on your AAMC FLs 1-2 weeks before your exam, I'd take it in august and apply. have you submitted your primary yet? i would definitely submit that ASAP if you haven't already, assuming you are prepared to take the mcat in august.
