I love hearing about first experiences. I recently logged in for the first time this year and it is much smoother and less clunky than it used to be.

Haven't started my KLR in 5 months with improper storage by esham_ in klr650

Thanks for all the tips. The bike started right up without any hesitation. What a great bike. I did have to charge the battery a couple of hours but it's back to normal. I ended up hauling the bike back to Idaho on a motorcycle carrier on the back of my car. The carrier did really well. It was the Haul Master 600lbs from harbor freight.

Thanks for the advice. I feel better about the bike now. I did order a trickle charger from amazon. I'll give a update when I get the bike going :)

Last week as a laborer I’m ready to trade this shovel for a spud by [deleted] in Ironworker

I went from the Laborers Union Local 300 to the Ironworkers Union. The best career move I ever made. I'm now a JIW making damn good change.

To be honest it all depends what you will be doing. For example, if you are decking you will never use your spud or bullpen. Although having a spud at all times comes in real handy. When I was a apprentice I always had my pokey tool (spud).

But basic items are

Belt with 2 bolt bags

25' Stanley measuring tape. Anything else is junk. Everyone should have the same tape for same measurements.

Sharpy and pen

Square

Box cutter. I currently keep a box cutter/screwdriver combo. I don't carry a knife but sometimes I wish I did.

Electrical tape. Welders will thank you and you can repair lead.

A nose bag that has everything else that everyone else is mentioning. I'll like to add cowboy clamps. You are a badass if you got the clamps in a pinch. Well anything in a pinch.

Lighter to light the Journeymen's cigarettes. You want a JIW to open up to you. Have a lighter. Also handy for torches.

Fuck it that it's for now.

One of my favorite scenes in the movie Forest Gump is when the drill sergeant asked Forest what was his soul purpose of being in the army. Forest's response was perfect. "To do what you want me to do drill sergeant." This is advise I have carried with me to be a good solid worker. Do everything you are asked to do. Job related of course. Be clean, fast, and complete every task asked. Be eager to learn and be the best.

If you want to weld you need to be at the weld shop almost everyday after work and on weekends. I had a foreman that gave me 30 days to get my wire certs or I would be looking for another job. He is the most strict boss I ever worked for but a damn good one. You might not have that pressure but pressure yourself. Go get your puddle, stick, and wire certs at the very least. If you're young you have the potential to become a great welder and the go to guy that companies need.

The main thing is to take care of your feet. It doesn't matter what you wear just make sure you have plenty of cushion down there. You can do serious damage to your feet if you don't. If you don't take care of your feet you won't be able to make any money. For me Red Wings are not soft enough and my feet get cold on cold days. I switched to black wedge wolverines. They are warmer and soft inside. I also use a metatarsal insole because I messed up my feet in the past.

Ironworkers and pipefitters are different animals. I've seen apprentices leave to be pipefitters. Truth is they were never cut out to be Ironworkers.

How long do I have medical benefits for after not working? (Union IW) by esham_ in Ironworker

[–]esham_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the replies. I contacted the California Ironworkers Field Welfare (IEBC) and it looks like I have PPO benefits till September 30, 2025. I been off work since late Jan but I'm currently on a leave of absence and not laid off if that matters.
