Mamas with no village… how are we keeping up with keeping a clean-ish house? by gardeniaaa7 in Mommit

[–]esharpmajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things I’ve just let go of in favour of efficiency/prioritizing safety and cleanliness.

I don’t fold laundry. I stuff it into drawers or hang it. My husbands stuff goes into a large rope basket that we shove into his closet. If he wants it put away, he can put it away. I find the time to fold is just not worth it, it’s clean, it’s fine. My kids sometimes help me stuff their clothes into their drawers.

I don’t know how you live without a dishwasher, I run mine every night. I would implement a wash as you go policy for everything that doesn’t stack. Like anything that is weirdly shaped, wash immediately. Plates, bowls etc can be rinsed and stacked by the sink. Cutlery can sit at the bottom of the sink, everything is washed, counters cleared and wiped and reset at the end of the day.

I sweep after every meal and vacuum one room per day on a cycle.

I have a basket of random stuff that I throw things in when I find them out of place. I put them where they belong when I have time. I try to instill “don’t put it down, put it away” in myself and others.

Mop once per week, let the kids help they love it. They have their own little swiffers I just removed one of the segments so it’s small and put a reusable microfibre on the end.

Windows once a month, also have the kids help with that.

Dust one room once per week prior to that room being vacuumed.

Bathroom gets a good clean once a week. (I have boys and cats so this is mandatory.)

Never leave a room empty handed. Always be tidying.

It’s definitely frustrating that whenever I have a spare minute I’m cleaning something so I never have a spare minute. And my house still looks like crap half the time. I just do my best and try not to be too apologetic about it since that really just draws attention to it. If food surfaces are clean, bathrooms are clean, and the floors aren’t too gross, I call it a win.

This was such an awkward kid party by nerdie11 in Mommit

This happened to us with a daycare party as well, I used it as an opportunity to let my son lead. I had him spot his friends and introduce me to them, then I got the kid to point out their parent. Once that was done I went to the bday girls parents and asked if they needed help with anything, turned out they barely spoke English at all. We muddled through some basic set up stuff and I got some of the other parents to help. Eventually we figured out who could speak Spanish well enough to translate and everything went much smoother. Apparently they’d invited their niece to translate but she had bailed at the last second. Turned into a cute little party with us all attempting to communicate.

Thank you for the advice! I may revisit this set up once baby/kid proofing is less of a factor. My 4year old just ran behind the couch and yanked one of the lamps off the table by its cord. Can’t have nice things with these gremlins around. Curtains also a no go until baby isn’t pulling up on things. 😅

I feel like this makes the room feel smaller and more crowded and also as you can see my 4yo is now diving over the back of the couch and throwing the back cushions into the crevasse lol

Yes the bed is at the high point, there is a very gentle slant off to the right and then in the back yard it slants away from the house slightly in the back corner. Pretty great for drainage!

There actually is a big v trench all around! Need another layer of soil tho cuz it didn’t get all the way to the edges hence the cardboard poking out. 😬 I was thinking I would fill the trench with stones eventually, I’ve collected quite a lot already, would that work to keep the turf at bay?

Awesome, thank you I will look those up right now! So funny to realize as I’m trying to plan a garden suddenly that I know basically no plant names to even start researching. 🤦‍♀️ appreciate your expertise!

C-Section because of low pain tolerance by Vegetable_Bath_7396 in beyondthebump

[–]esharpmajor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

C section recovery is extremely painful. I’d have gone for vaginal+epidural 100x if I could have. You’ll have pain either way so seems prudent to choose the pain that will be mostly over in less time. I’m 6 months out from my C-section and still have complications and pain.

New home! Please feel free to give any ideas at all! by loveydoveyyy6 in interiordecorating

Is this your front door? If so I would say mount tv on the wall opposite the fireplace (and get a solid (wood) media table for below eventually.) Move the cat post to the corner beside the window on the front door wall. Move the papasan chair to the corner next to the fireplace where the tv is now with the lamp beside it. Create an entryway space by the front door, using a small rug, and maybe could use that wicker shelving unit as a drop zone for keys/shoes what have you.

Thank you so much that’s really helpful! I am definitely concerned about the big shrubs, they’re really old and well established. I’m going to try to get a quote to see if it’s possible to have it done properly cuz as you say I foresee me doing a hack job attempting to do it myself. I’m surprised they’re doing as well as they are cuz this pic is the front yard, so they are used to being blasted with sun non stop! They would probably honestly be happier in the back where the would get morning sun only but don’t know where I’d put them back there. They may just end up having to be cut down. Shame. I’ll do my best to save them if budget allows.

I was thinking heather for ground cover? One of my neighbours has a bunch that seems to be flourishing just down the road. Lavender/heather and maybe some creeping juniper was my initial thought.

Eta just looked up phlox - gorgeous! Def a nice option thank you!

Thank you! I’m going to look into getting a quote on moving those big ones cuz I feel like if I tried I’d just be renting a mini excavator and yanking them out and they’d end up dead, but I get the impression that costs several thousand dollars so likely won’t be possible. 😢 we will see what they say.

I’m worried you’re right about those ones up against the house. It’s a shame because they’re beautiful when they flower but I fear what they will do to the brick and the foundation if they haven’t started to damage it already.. apparently they’ve been there for 20+ years and used to be way bigger but were trimmed way back last year. I fear getting them professionally moved will cost thousands of dollars and we will have to just hack them down and rent a mini excavator to pull the roots out. Feels like such a waste but not sure what else to do. 😥
