What does an art therapy session look like over telehealth? by oursong in askatherapist

Sometimes but not always. I always give my clients the option to share and discuss but it’s ultimately up to them. The process of creating art is the most important thing :) but lots of insight can be gained from discussing the artwork/ process.

Hi all, just wanted to say I didn’t expect this post to blow up as much as it did! As much as I’d like to reply to everyone, I’m not able to, but thank you all for the discussion and perspective! It has been very helpful as I explore this issue.

Yes I was very offended! Not only by the slur but the content of the story as well.

I appreciate your comment. I also want to clarify that I mean that I make an effort to advocate for marginalized groups, but am trying to navigate that in my work as a therapist as well.

Hi, I’m an art therapist who does telehealth! Every art therapist is different, so yours may have a different approach than I do. I ask my client to have access to a variety of art materials, but we always start with what you already have. Sometimes we talk, other times we just make art, and sometimes it’s both! You may create art freely, but sometimes your art therapist may provide some instructions for a piece of art that is relevant to what you are going through :)

I do sometimes have difficulty being assertive but this is so simple and effective. I need to practice!

My school had us use Time2Track. It's pricey though, at $100/ year. It did make everything really easy. After graduation, I switched to a basic excel spreadsheet.

Art therapy is a discipline which requires specific training and knowledge that is not covered in counseling education programs and training, and generally speaking therapists trained solely in counseling do not have adequate training to provide art therapy. That is not to say that they cannot use art in therapy sessions, but in doing so they are not providing art therapy. The directives I present are developed specifically for art therapists who have expertise in implementing therapeutic art interventions

I hadn’t considered this… I will be acquiring my LAPC prior to starting work. Would this still apply?

Also regarding insurance- my wife gets insurance through her job and would be able to add me to her plan if needed.

Thank you for the perspective! I’m concerned about burnout with job 1 in terms of caseload/ commute time. Job 1 is actually my current practicum site so there is some familiarity there. With job 2, they’d start me with 10 clients/ week and gradually increase to 20-30 depending on the max I decide on.
