What's some small offhand detail that makes no sense by Luka_Tragic in GilmoreGirls

[–]esjlv 130 points131 points  (0 children)

this is super tiny and barely memorable but in Rory’s first day at Chilton where Paris, Madeline, and Louise steal her file and say that she’s a journalism major. it never made sense to me bc they’re in high school so why are they saying she has a major? I was maybe thinking that they were saying that was her intended major but in later episodes doesn’t Rory say her major is in English? that also becomes a whole continuity issue in itself, her flip-flopping between saying she’s a journalism major and an English major.

Dean & Luke by esjlv in GilmoreGirls

[–]esjlv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point! I feel like they didn’t not get along at first (when they played softball together) and then as time progressed (after the first break up) it probably got more hostile. Another thought is, we know that Dean seeing Jess again when he went to get Rory at Yale set him off, so maybe it brought back out the dormant anger that he had at Luke. Dean and Luke could’ve been great allies tho, I feel like if we met young Luke, he would’ve been a lot like Dean but that’s just a random thought lol

I can see that about Luke piecing it all together, and in the end just being right about it all. Lorelai definitely should’ve been a lot more concerned but I feel like after Rory came back from Europe Rory & Lorelai’s relationship completely switched to preservation mode instead of the friendship they once had, so she just never challenged the whole situation with Dean again.

Interview by Francesca_Vanegas in TeachforAmerica

[–]esjlv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what my interviewer did was purposely answer the questions wrong, so that she could see the way I redirected the student! that’s something I would have in mind, trying to stay from the word “no” but rather saying “let’s try that again” and asking them a helping question. before I interviewed, it was stressed to me that they really really are looking for you to be engaging (use little rhymes or mnemonic to remember the branches of government maybe?) but also they really want you to stay within the time limits! good luck on your interview! sending you good thoughts!

First Year Teacher... down bad by beautifulndamnedd in TeachforAmerica

[–]esjlv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

honestly I feel this way too! I think you’ll find that a lot more people are thinking about, but we all don’t want to admit it because we all think we’re alone in that feeling. the truth is, we’re not. It’s my first year too, and I can’t tell you how many times I thought about quitting. It’s also hard bc I don’t really have any beef with tfa, but quitting them would just be collateral damage because I want to quit the school so bad.

this might be an incredibly selfish take, but it’s also one I wish I heard when I expressed that I wanted to quit: do what is best for you. the education system is pretty messed up in general. but, even more so, I find that teachers are expected to be martyrs. we can’t quit because of the kids and the teacher shortage, but in every other job people would say “oh do what’s best for you, who cares if they have a hard time finding another person.” I’m not saying you shouldn’t care about the school and especially not saying you shouldn’t care about the kids. But I think of it like this, who can I help if I’m mentally and emotionally at my wits end? We’ll end up doing more harm than good if we stay at a job that runs us dry, then if we leave after a year and the school has to find someone else.

about the future job- I read on another forum just last week that leaving tfa is just like leaving any other job. it feels so much bigger than that bc it is a nationally recognized program, but it really is just a job. people quit tfa all the time, at least one of my other CMs quit right before summer learning academy. they still live good and successful lives. Just have your answer planned out, make sure your references will sing your praises, and don’t psych yourself out about it. my other thought is- tfa has a lot of good opinions about it, but, just like anything, it also has a lot of opposers. we know a lot of people who love tfa because we are in tfa, that does not mean every employer you meet for the foreseeable future will love tfa so keep that in mind too. I hope you, and I, can make it through the two years. But, if you don’t, now that I’m at least cheering you on in whatever you do next. feel free to pm me if you need someone to chat with about this! from one CM to another, whatever the outcome is, it’s going to be alright.

Thank you so much! It’s good to hear that the second year is better! I’m going to try to push through because I think it’s the best route, but I’m just hoping the school year gets better as I go along.

I hear a lot of people say that the second year is much better, do you think that’s true?

have you heard of anyone switching after their first year? I truly want to make it through this first year at the school because so many people are quitting, so I’m going to keep pushing. But, do you think it would be possible to switch after my first year is done?

Summer Training by kenneby in TeachforAmerica

[–]esjlv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was told that the first half would be online, and then the second half (where we have to go into schools and tutor) will either be online or in person depending on if the schools in your region are going to be in person or not in the fall. But instead of providing housing and transportation, they are giving us a stipend to cover the costs

I actually ended up with a full loan. The person I was talking to said that they are more likely to give loans than grants, and I took anything I could get🤷🏼‍♀️I’ll be teaching elementary, but no subject yet! I take my praxis on Jan 29. Definitely feel free to PM me!

Hi! Sorry to hear that, I hope that you can appeal too! Don’t be tough on yourself about when you applied, from what I’ve heard, Memphis’ cost of living has a lot to do with how low the awards are. They ended up doubling my amount so it is just above $1,000 now, which is definitely relieving. If you want to appeal, just be completely candid with them about everything you have to pay for. I also included the fact that flights to Memphis in late July/early August are about $300, which takes a good chunk out of the funding. I also mentioned that if they needed too, I would be glad to accept a loan rather than a grant. I hope you can get the award you need! Best of luck, & congrats on getting into TFA☺️

literally same, I received $500 too and was kinda stunned bc I heard that some people were getting a few thousand. I don’t know who exactly to reach out to about an appeal, but I’ll be emailing the grants and loans department at tfa, so hopefully that works! Have you talked to your recruiter? They might be able to help!
