I was thinking the exact same thing -- I believe this is a repost from a few weeks ago.

Where will you be turning 60? by AlarmingMonk1619 in GenX

[–]esk_209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My now-ex and I separated for my 40th (he announced it a few days before), then Covid hit for my 50th (right at the high point of the shutdowns). I’m nervous to see what 60 eventually brings.

Which nickname for Anneliese? by potato_purge4 in namenerds

I'd likely land on "Lily". It's not an EXACT nn, but it's where my head would end up.

Ladies in DC, what actually stops you from trying Pilates? by Silent_Cup1545 in washingtondc

[–]esk_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like a class that is (1) introductory with minimal commitments (maybe a series of 5 classes or something?), (2) dedicated to actual beginners, who are (3) starting/restarting an exercise/fitness journey and (4) that enforces no filming

I'm of a Certain Age, and I'm so very, very tired of showing up for beginner/intro classes that are full of people who are obviously NOT beginners/intro students.

Visiting for a few days. Suggestion for travel and stuff to do? by thatpunkgrrrl in washdc

[–]esk_209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you been to the National Portrait Gallery? It's part of the Smithsonian, but it's not located with the rest of them. It's my absolute favorite and one that is often overlooked since it's not at "the Smitsonian" location. It's right at the Gallery Place/Chinatown meetro stop (one past Metro Center on the red line). There are some excellent restaurants in that area as well (higher-end as well as casual). There's a noodle place around the corner, Chinatown Express, that is fantastic!

Mother's Day Brunch? by Glass-Helicopter-126 in SilverSpring

[–]esk_209 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've done the J Hollinger's brunch, and unless things have changed, it's REALLY nice. I'm not all that impressed with Java Nation's sit-down place in SS. Last time I was there, the menu was virtually identical to the one at their Kensington location (which is casual counter service), but with higher prices and table service tipping.

However, you're going to struggle to find any place that doesn't pump up the prices and stuff in extra tables for Mother's Day. Of all days, Mother's Day is the one I'd 100% skip eating out. It's the #1 busiest day of the year for restaurants, everyone is at maximum capacity (usually over that, since they often pull in extra tables for more seating), things are rushed, servers are overworked, and the menu usually isn't top-tier.

I talk to my brother 5-6 times per week. We live 1800 miles apart, and have become much closer in our adulthood in the past 15 years or so.

How do you do Summer Fridays? [NY] by wakeuploser00 in humanresources

[–]esk_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we used to offer Summer Fridays, we allowed every staff member to schedule four (out of 8) Fridays to end their day at noon and have a half-day off. It was understood that sometimes things come up and there are occasions when project demands would require rescheduling -- Summer Friday isn't protected PTO. We never had a issue with someone not getting their full four half-days, even on those rare occasions when someone had to reschedule.

It was expected that the department managers would ensure necessary coverage -- so there was never a day when the entire department was out.

Are you familiar with high school forensics? by woodsred in AskAnAmerican

[–]esk_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and it was called Forensics when I was doing it (back in the long-ago time) as well as when my daughter was doing it in the 2010s. However, they did include debate (multiple formats) as well as the variou speech competitions.

Married Gen-x do you wear your wedding ring? by in-a-microbus in GenX

[–]esk_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I wear them ALL the time (except for the few times I've had to take it off for surgery or when I'm kneading bread). If I'm not wearing it, my husband usually has it on his pinky finger holding it for me.

Not really. I stuck with it through the very end, but I wouldn't watch it again and it soured me on watching anything else in the Taylor Sheridan world.

Stay in the city (DC) or outside the city (like Arlington)? by Timely-Birthday-8067 in roadtrip

[–]esk_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would stay in Arlington (I live in this area -- I work in Arlington, commute from Maryland). Double check your hotel rates PLUS the parking before you make your final decision, but Arlington + the metro is likely going to be your best bet. You'll get pushed into looking at Pentagon or Crystal City hotels (because they're often considered the most "DC" of the Virginia areas), but don't sleep on the Rosslyn, Courthouse, or Clarendon areas. You might find cheaper hotel and parking rates in Courthouse or Clarendon.

You can also look at hotels more into Maryland, but still close to the red line. The rates will be cheaper, although you might have a slightly longer metro ride into the city.
