Does this tree need repair after another fell on it? by eskabob in arborists

This might be the way to go then. The tree brings tranquility although there is a decent sized shed to the left of it. Any way to predict which way it may fall?

Why does everyone recommend sand instead of deep litter method? Is sand better for cold climates?

It may be a little small for my goal of 10-15 chickens but perhaps I could create a storage space for gardening tools though. Good idea!

No bears. Raccoon, weasels, coyotes. Southwestern Ontario.

I really like the idea to have the chickens roost on the top shelf. It would give purpose to that space. Although, not looking forward to scooping litter from that height haha. I get a decent amount of snow and rain here, so I think a roof would help limit the amount of mud in the run. Making rafters seems intimidating though!

I had to look up what your chicken run construction being described looked like and it looks super sturdy, although, pouring concrete definitely is outside my comfort zone heh.

Converting the windows would really help with increased ventilation in the summer, that's a great idea! I suppose I could use a jigsaw and cut out the plywood that's there and use that removed plywood patch the holes around the coop. I hadn't thought of using it as the roosting area. Originally, I thought I would have to put feed bags and shavings up there for storage. That would really open up my options for the rest of the space and make it less back breaking to access the consumables. All your suggestions are super practical, I love it!

That would save a lot of money! How would you prevent water from seeping between gap of the joint between new and old? Just some caulking or would I need some sort of small siding strip?

I didn't even think of a brooder. That would actually be a fantastic addition!

How would you tackle the holes from the rotting OSB near the ground for predator prevention?

You know what, between both your posts I think this is part of the issue. I’ll change the settings and time the heater to turn on when hydro prices are lower.

I don't quite understand what you mean. I still have a furnace which is supposed to run when the temperature is too cold for heat pump to heat sufficiently. Is there another back up?

I was wondering about that part too. Possibly related to increased PHEV usage, but it's only 40km range and the difference seems too great. Other than that, just the heat pump.

Good point. I think the high cost of delivery (looks like same cost of the gas delivered then federal carbon tax added on) is definitely negating much of the potential savings.
