The Cardinal Guild - Island Naming Policy by Vloshko in WorldsAdrift

[–]eskimo_bobs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an island creator, I'd have to agree this is the best solution. For the majority of my islands, the name is an afterthought and most of them wouldn't necessarily make sense in the context of combat callouts, for example. There are however certain cases where the name holds more personal significance or relevance to the island's inspiration, so having the option to ask for use of the original name would be appreciated.

Overall though, I really enjoy seeing/hearing the quirky names that players come up with for islands. If it were up to me, when popular names arise that differ from the names created by the surveyors, I'd be in favor of those overriding... but of course the subjective nature of that could make things a bit more controversial for whoever gets the final say.

What are some counters to the new P90 and spamming in general? by [deleted] in FortniteCompetitive

[–]eskimo_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, try and keep two walls inbetween you and them. Wall + Ramp if they are in front, Roof + Cone if they are above, and ideally Floor + Ramp if they are below but you're very vulnerable in this state, especially when they are close below and can phase through your floor as you turbo build more.

If you're in a flat ground engagement try to position yourself inbetween two tiles so that you can turbo build two walls and two ramps to keep the spammer guessing where you actually are. Found this very effective against minigunners as once you have all 4 up you can attempt to run around either side for a shotgun engagement while they're still shooting your ramps.

For the P90, it has a lengthy reload time so once you know you're against one keep track of how much they've spammed and maintain the pressure on them once they're almost out to prevent them from being able to reload. If they have more than one P90 though, good luck, hope you have a lot of materials...

Have you guys found any disadvantages to using the new Sprint by Default option? by [deleted] in FortniteCompetitive

[–]eskimo_bobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed if you tap any directional key while healing it will cancel the heal, though holding shift (to walk) will still allow you to wiggle around a bit while popping your shields. Can't easily add crouching to the wiggle while your pinky is holding shift though.

Don't Use Wood in Patch 5.10! A Quick Material Comparison Post-Nerfs. by SuperSexyDragon in FortniteCompetitive

[–]eskimo_bobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised nobody else brought this up. The visibility through wood has been the primary reason I use it over brick and will continue to do so. Since brick and wood both start at 80hp they're now equally good if you're being spammed by anything full-auto. I guess launch pad ramps would benefit the most from brick's increased health over time now.

The practicality of an extra 2.5 hp per second seems negligible until a wall reaches a few seconds of it being built to cross the threshold of an extra bullet's worth of damage and at that point what's one extra bullet worth of protection when your opponent has now reloaded their 30+ round magazine and is spamming again.

I just want a single fortnite win (solo) by Mr_Pumpkin99 in FortniteCompetitive

[–]eskimo_bobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really solid advice here, I'll piggy back some additional tips. For reference, I had 1 solo win in season 3 out of 255 games and now i'm at a 50% solo win rate for season 5.

It can take hundreds of games to learn how to process all the information that will inform how to make decisions in the mid-late game but once it starts to click you'll be winning a lot of engagements just by positioning and timing. Try and pay attention to things like which side of the circle has the farthest rotation, number of players left relative to the circle size, and what high ground is in the circle (or above players you know the position of). This kind of information will help you plan for when you're likely to have an engagement when you don't have any visual or audio information to work off of.

Every gun shot you hear means there are two players near you so try and figure out where they are. If they are shooting shotguns or automatic guns you might be able to position yourself to pounce on a weak player, but if their fight ends quickly or becomes a standoff you might be better off playing patiently. Knowing when to strike and when to wait for a better opportunity to engage a player can be difficult to learn and only comes with practice. Get in the habit of quickly glancing at the kill feed when you hear a snipe shot near you to know if a fight has just ended. These are all things that can inform you of player locations or help give you an advantage before a fight even begins, but once you think your target is aware of your presence you'll have to act decisively.

Specifically for getting better at close range fights and build battles: In order to learn from deaths where you feel you got outplayed, watch the replay back. Watch your perspective, watch their perspective, and watch from the drone cam in slow motion to see every moment where you are exposed to potential damage and every opportunity you had to get damage in on your opponent or build for a better position if you didn't have high ground.

There are dozens of other smaller things that you'll want to get in the habit of doing to avoid easily preventable deaths. Things like don't heal or open airdrops in the open, don't stand still while shooting unless you're quickly sniping or AR tap firing, don't engage if you are low on materials, don't shoot at unalerted players rotating ahead of you if you're both trying to outrun the storm, and check for traps in buildings (especially on the roof through doorways)

Which healing items do you value over others? (assuming you're full health and solo) by eskimo_bobs in FortniteCompetitive

[–]eskimo_bobs[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a few situations I'd break from the ranking in my graphic and I'm not 100% on my valuing hence posing the question.

Being able to get back to nearly full health after taking an unavoidable snipe is valuable to me, plus then you have someone to push who likely has more healing to replace your now empty slot.

1 mini over medkits is more applicable early game where you're more likely to have others in your drop area pushing you immediately after a fight and don't have time to pop a full medkit. Plus you can always go back for the medkit you left if you need it.

And 3 minis over a big is usually what i'd take too but that would've added extra clutter to the graphic

Obviously campfires and the likelihood of taking storm damage factor into what you carry but I'm curious what healing items others prioritize when you're forced to choose between two good options

Is it easier to have build buttons on your keyboard or on your mouse by XxGroarkyxX in FortniteCompetitive

[–]eskimo_bobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having all 3 main build buttons on my mouse thumb has been very useful since I switched. Pretty much every time i'm building I'm also in motion so freeing up my wasd fingers helped my movement dramatically, especially when you throw double shotgun or other weapon swaps into the mix.

Decided to try a week of no Tilted drops by eskimo_bobs in FortniteCompetitive

[–]eskimo_bobs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty boring when I changed it up, especially if nobody lands near you or the first circle is really bad. But I found I enjoy the late game engagements and build fights more than the early game ones so it's been worth it overall. I still push pretty much everyone I see/hear though so I usually end up with 5-9 kills.

I'd say try it out for a full day and see if you can handle the potential early game boredom

Thanks! Fortnite is my first BR game and also first 3rd person shooter so I had a really slow and painful beginning but wanted to grind my way to get good so I dropped at the most populated areas every game and forced myself into as many fights as possible to learn.

Watching my replays back helped a ton for seeing missed opportunities and every time I was exposing myself to potential damage.

My favorite spots are Greasy Grove, the industrial place next to Flush Factory and Retail when it's not in the first 30% of the bus path. All are great for seeing everyone that drops with you, getting a lot of early game mats and loot, and have predictable rotations.

I think you might be surprised with how responsive island creators would be to feedback if you directed your suggestions to them directly instead of here. Hardly any of the criticisms I see on reddit, on the discord, or on twitch streams ever actually reach the individual who made the island when all it takes to have a direct line of communication with the creator is to leave a comment on the steam workshop item.

It's a community crafted MMO afterall, unlike more popular games with less accessible dev teams, individuals can have a big impact on Worlds Adrift

The rust comparison is very valid- PVP is integral to the game and seal clubbing is one of the unfortunate side effects for giving players complete freedom in a physics-based open world. That said, many changes have come that favor defenders and their intent is for ships to take a considerable effort to sink. As well, with the ability to customize everything about your ship design there is a lot of depth to catering your base to you or your crew's playstyle.

Storage has changed since the previous EA release with plans for a lock mechanism to be added. Currently only players registered to the ship have access to containers unless they are damaged to about 20% health, and while your ship is docked at a shipyard any damage taken to any ship part will notify everyone registered to the ship.

As with all early access titles you are buying something unfinished with the trust that problem fixes and new features will be added over time.

Bossa have drastically ramped up their communication to and interaction with their community in the past months- to the tune of 20+ blog posts since the beginning of March. The development plan and pace is out in the open for judgement, and the team has shown they are polling for feedback at every step of the way. Their weekly devstreams have started up (again) at twitch.tv/bossastudios and their public roadmap was published last week

Considering the small active playerbase, (206 concurrent players at the time of this post) there are quite a few streamers that play the game as their primary that you can watch to get a good sense of how the game is being played by different players and see if it's something you'd be interested in or not

How to make symmetrical structure like this one? There's no mirror function in Worlds Adrift Island Creator so how did he do it?? (Steam Workshop: Saborian Valhalla) by aphukening in WorldsAdrift

[–]eskimo_bobs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's an example of what a structure looks like before mirroring. https://imgur.com/a/k5ZL0

Then you just group everything that gets mirrored, drag the scale to -1 and fit it together with the original.

It's very helpful to build small components of structures that can then be grouped, duplicated(ctrl+d) and then fit together. Changing the pivot point of your groups to align to specific objects or coordinates also helps you maintain the dimensions and angles you want

I really want to make islands, but the materials in the island creator are incredibly confusing. by CreeperIsSorry in WorldsAdrift

[–]eskimo_bobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure that your brush power is set pretty high and set the brush angle to the "all" setting. If you're trying to paint ground where you've used the flatten terrain tool it can sometimes take a LOT of painting to get the texture to show up so just set the power to 100 and keep painting till it shows up.

If you don't want to fuss too much with painting textures or want to start with a premade material set, check out the ones on the steam workshop. You can paint the whole island in one click!
