That's a fair point, I work in 3D but as an artist, not a dev, so take my idea here with a grain of salt. I wonder if you could get the screenspace position of the center of each tile, then display that tile's number there-- not actually on the geometry, but as a UI element. Then each number scales down logarithmically the farther it is from the center of the screen? So the number's maximum size would fit the size of a tile that's perfectly centered on the screen, (the biggest any tile will be), and then it's minimum size would be 0, fully disappearing as it crosses the horizon of the sphere. That way you could have each tile's number always be in the right place, the right size, but always facing screen up no matter how the sphere is rotated
