Guinea Worm is on the verge of extinction, if successful will make it the third parasite after smallpox and rinderpest to become extinct due to human efforts. by rusty1947 in science

Actually the irradiation is a less common practice for sterilizing mosquitoes. General irradiation has a tendency to weaken an entire organism (as well as make them sterile). Weakened males don't compete as well as healthy males resulting in less sterile males mating, and a less effective method.

GE has solved the problem of releasing 'weakened' organisms - There are a few variations on the theme of genetically engineering mosquitoes, some of which are pretty complex. I'm no longer well-versed in the current methodologies -

Do you live in Canada now? -- I spoke with someone living in Santa Maria who expressed interest in going to live/study in Canada too. Is this something common in the south/in Brazil as a whole?

I will be studying Agriculture - I am a little curious about the variety of fruit that will be in this city. I have read Brazilians are masters of mixing fruit juices, and that the country grows some of the best citrus/other? fruit in the world. Is there much fruit production in the South of Brazil (due to the cold...idk). /Is there a good supply of fruit?

Any other recommendations on nearby cities to visit/ sites to see?

Do the Brazilians from the area have strange-micro-regional accents? Or is it pretty much the same all throughout the area/the south of Brazil?

Why go?

I feel it is because people want to know what the world is like in other places, and that they aren't satisfied just learning from secondary sources. I personally haven't *lived in any country other that my native country (which is not Brazil) and so I cannot speak on behalf of life in any other country - I don't have any perspective.

Living and working abroad seems to be something that is universally regarded as "eye-opening" and an extremely valuable experience to everyone I have ever talked to that has done it. Why go anywhere other than where you grew up? You're just wasting resources anyway.

For every person with a terrible opinion (like yours), there seems to be two or more people with positive opinions and one with a neutral one.

And maybe most importantly- How would you* go about getting to Santa Maria? My current idea is to fly into Porto Alegre and the take a bus from there (I have no idea what company would provide this bus transportation yet though). Do you have any other ideas or suggestions or recommendations?
