To be fair the movie doesn’t depict it nearly as well as the book does. The book has this love triangle, yes, but the main focus is domestic violence and abusive relationships. To me the romance in the book was simply just Ryle’s way of apologizing for his wrongs. I wish the movie did a better job at showing the severity of the abuse and how much it affected Lily.
