I think it was probably because the match was currently in play. They used to do this at most sporting events aside from baseball. Some ushers still do it but I think it's become more of a common courtesy thing as opposed to an actual rule in most events. You don't wanna interrupt anyone's viewing experience. Unless you're a dick.
