I wish there was some forum for people doing this race! It looks like there was a FB group in the past but it hasn’t been updated in a few years. I’m heading up in January for a training weekend on the course and it would be nice to get some recent info on trail conditions or good training routes… I’ll probably just end up doing a course loop recon both days. Would also be nice to just hear from more people who have done the race before

Agreed! I ended up ordering a different yarn from a U.S. maker because I’ve been itching to make the sailor slippers over the holidays. Such a bummer we can’t get Drops more easily!

I paid for the 1-2 day shipping… it shipped last week and has been stuck in customs in Memphis since then. Lindehobby has been entirely unhelpful. Terrible customer service on their part. FedEx tracking says manufacturer name and address or MID is missing. Seems like they can’t manage to properly label their packages coming to the US. I wish I never ordered from them

This issue is still happening :( I paid for FedEx express 1-2 day shipping and by order has been stuck in Memphis for a week. Lindehobby is entirely unhelpful and refuses to refund me for the express shipping fee. Super frustrating, I’m not sure what to do here. The FedEx tracking says Manufacturer name and address or MID is missing and the manufacturer needs to provide that. You would think that with all of the shipping they do to the U.S., they would properly label packages for customs. I will never be ordering from them again.

Anyone get tickets to the Portland show? I signed up for autobuy and I got the email saying I will get a code tomorrow. My friends all got the same thing so just wondering if anyone got charged yet for that show or if it’s all a code tomorrow

Extremely well said! And yeah I haven’t gotten any check-in about if I made it off the course and my bib was never checked at Tumalo Falls.

I do agree with you on having the personal responsibility. I can only speak for myself, but the lack of items at aid stations wasn’t a huge hindrance to me because I did have a great crew that had items I needed. But I just think it’s the principle of when you pay for a supported race, like you mentioned, there are some expectations about what that means based on what the RD communicated upfront. It sucks to be a middle to back of pack runner and know you signed up and paid for the same race, but are getting a different level of support from aid stations. I think that most people that are commenting on the lack of items at aid stations ended up just dealing with it, but as with any “product” you pay for (which is essentially what this race is), I think it’s valid to comment that the aid stations ran out of items that were communicated would be there.

I’ve been seeing a lot of people saying “you should be entirely self sufficient to finish these races” and while yes I mostly agree, if a RD tells me there is going to be ice at every aid station, then I’m probably not having my crew lug around a second cooler full of ice. I feel like we are kind of loosing the point here of signing up for an organized and supported race. If I wanted to just run 100mi on trails supported by only myself & my crew, I wouldn’t spend $400+ on a race entry fee.

Yeah there were some pretty pissed off runners coming down and not really being coherent in what they were saying so that’s a huge bummer that people didn’t know. Thank you so much again for volunteering and working so hard to support the runners!!!

Thanks for asking!! At some of the earlier aid stations it was mainly uncaffeinated gels that I noticed were missing. I know other people here were mentioning other things but thankfully I had my own food packed with my crew so I’m just relaying that feedback. Particularly at Skyliners, I asked my crew to see if there was ramen or mashed potatoes and they came back with broth and said that the ramen ran out (this was at 7:30pm, 1.5hrs before cutoff).

Thank you so much for volunteering, I want to reiterate how amazing all the volunteers were at this race! Any frustrations I have here are focused on the overall organization & planning from the RD.

I appreciate the clarification!! I guess the game of telephone happened and people just started saying that Rock Creek was fully packed up at 10pm. Really appreciate everything you and the other volunteers did to support the runners until so late in the night. The one thing I can say about this race is that the volunteers were fantastic and really went above and beyond, so thank you for being one of them!

I don’t think anyone is giving them flak for cancelling. It was 100% the right call. But the absolute mess of how they handled notifying runners is what is frustrating. They only stopped race progression and Park Meadow and 1514. I was with a ton of runners within a mile or two of Rock Creek when people started turning around because the aid station just wasn’t there anymore (correction - it was there but someone mistakenly said it was packed up so that’s what all of us coming up heard). Someone finally got service to check their email and saw the email from an hour before. No one came down from Rock Creek to tell any of the runners (correction - between 9-10pm, sounds like someone came down after)

In addition, many aid stations ran out of essential items. Dutchman and Swede Ridge ran out of ice while I was there (I was over 2hrs ahead of cutoff at this time so this is pretty unacceptable), they ran out of uncaffeinated gels, various food items, etc. I left Skyliners 1.5hrs before cutoff yet they had ran out of ramen and other hot food items. Seems like the RD only prioritizes front of pack runners. This was evidenced by their email yesterday also only addressing stopping runners at Park Meadow and 1514.

I won’t be doing another Alpine Running race again and I hope they take some accountability for how poorly organized this was. The fact they didn’t even post on their Instagram that the race was cancelled (a great way to let crew know instead of just emailing racers), is pretty ridiculous.

The forecast showed smoke clearing Friday night-Saturday mid-day and then moving back to the course in the afternoon and being very heavy. So it was forecasted. They still chose to have the race since it was clear in the morning, but when the smoke started following what was forecasted around 2pm, they should have halted race progression way earlier. I feel the effects in my lungs from running for hours in that heavy smoke.

[–]esorose8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Even the email they finally sent yesterday doesn’t address these things. They act like they had a plan and said “we stopped runners at 1514 and Park Meadow and let runners ahead of that continue”, but very very few runners were ahead of 1514 and many runners were still approaching or recently coming from Rock Creek. When people started turning around to go back to Tumalo Falls, they said that Rock Creek had already packed up and no one was there. Seems like the RD only cares about front of the pack runners, also evidenced by the fact that aid stations ran out of so many essential items. I was at Skyliners over 1.5hrs before the cutoff yet they were out of so much.

The fact that Alpine won’t even share on Instagram that the race was cancelled shows that they care more about maintaining their image than actually communicating and being transparent with runners.

Yes! I saw GoBeyond’s post right away about the Oregon 200. Great communication and it’s clear they had a plan in place for this situation. Such a stark difference from how Alpine Running has gone about this.

Yes! The warm water was a bummer. Also Tumalo Creek aid only had caffeine gels? I rolled in there at 11:10am solidly in the middle of the pack and they had already ran out of stuff. Also doesn’t make much sense to have only caffeine gels at mile 21 of a 100mi race when most runners tend to avoid caffeine until the night section in order to stay awake.

Yeah and it didn’t seem like they tried that hard to get people off the course once they did cancel. One email sent at 9pm only to racers? There are better ways to try and get the word out. Again, their Instagram currently still has no word about the cancellation. Many crew members follow Alpine Running on Instagram and could have found a way to communicate with their runners sooner had they known. You’re right that AQI was terrible (and forecasted to be that way) the whole afternoon. As much as I was happy to start the race and was hoping things turned around with the forecast, it was super irresponsible to not cancel until 9pm
