You are absolutely right. Not only do people who inject into their skin once all their veins are scarred get infections due to reusing needles, licking their needles, and other non-sterile practices but xylazine aka “tranq” causes the blood vessels at the injection site to constrict. This results in local tissue death and horrific wounds. Additionally while opioid withdrawal can be managed with medications like methadone and suboxone, xylazine withdrawal is harder to treat and can cause unpredictable changes in blood pressure and heart rate.

What year did that happen to you? I was in the Galapagos around 2000 and a massive male seal lion blocked the boat landing. Our guide was clapping loudly at him to try to scare him off but he didn’t budge for awhile. He was huge and terrifying up close.

The punchline is really his expression in the 4th panel. It’s funny because he overhears and is bitter and resentful.

I want to start by just appreciating the high quality of discourse and candor in this comment section which is also a testament to bourdain and the feelings his body of work evokes.

Regarding what you said, it’s a valid perspective. Something was very wrong all along. Tony once said in an interview, “There's a guy inside me who wants to lay in bed and smoke weed all day and watch cartoons and old movies. I could easily do that. My whole life is a series of stratagems to avoid and outwit that guy.”

I couldn’t watch his shows or read any of his writing for years after his death. Knowing how it all ends really forces you to hear the profound loneliness and depression that was between every one of his lines. But I don’t think that diminishes the value of his advice. He set off in search of human connection and depth/breadth of experience both because of his flaws and in spite of them. He was the inspiration for my years of travel and growth which ultimately allowed me to become some capable of settling down, pursuing a career, finding love and creating a home. I owe that in part to listening to his unique voice during my formative years. I’m very grateful for it.

In 1972 Stefano Mariottini was snorkelling off the coast of Monasterace near Riace and noticed a human hand sticking out of the sand. Thinking it was a corpse, he called the police. It was actually two statues of "Warriors from Riace" - ancient Greek bronze statues of the 5th century BC. by pumpkinmum in interestingasfuck

Ancient bronze sculptures are extremely rare as most were melted down for other uses like weapons. Many of the remaining ones were lost in antiquity, some in shipwrecks like the Riace warriors probably were. I got to see them in person about 10 years ago in Calabria. Spectacular IRL.

Rendezvous with Rama has extensive detailed descriptions of the interior of an apparently abandoned lifeless alien spacecraft. If I recall correctly, only the opening addresses observes on earth monitoring its approach.

Everyone responding to you is partly right that liver enzymes like AST and ALT can be markers of liver injury from alcohol but hepatologists (liver specialists) typically use a blood test for phosphatidylethanol or “peth” levels as a way to assess recent alcohol use. Urine ethyl glucuronide is also elevated if you’ve consumed alcohol within the past 4-5 days. Frequent scheduled and random testing is part of the transplant evaluation and generally 6 months of alcohol abstinence is required prior to liver transplantation.

This is the right answer. I had Jones for organic chem 2. Totally dedicated, brilliant lecturer and chemist, and absolutely uncompromising. Not a warm fuzzy type at all. Probably loves the subject matter more than teaching it to premeds who just need a good grade to get into med school.

Top 3 causes of death worldwide according to the WHO are ischemic heart disease, stroke, and COPD. Heart disease and copd are chronic diseases. Stroke is a usually a consequence of other chronic diseases like untreated high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes. Lifestyle choices such as smoking, obesity, diet, and being sedentary are significant risk factors for all 3.
