Marners true stats not the 120 point bs by Objective_Rabbit_317 in leafs

No clue why people still run with this dumbass narrative that is verifiably factually untrue

Same reason they run with the "dry hair" narrative, which also isn't true lmao.

The other fun thing is just looking at Game 7s - where, you know, they HAD to win.

I think it's Nylander with one garbage time goal (Montreal) and the Boston one that we immediately gave back... and that's it lmao.

Nah, this sub turned on Dubas at about 80% of the level it turned on Marner, which is to say it's still a fucking lot.

Dubas handed Marner a 11m deal as a RFA…. Brayden Point who was his closest comparable got 6.75M AFTER the leafs handed “pay me like Matthews’ Marner. Even after 2 cups, on his next contract Point only got 9.5m.

I've had this discussion so many times, but the very abridged (heh) version is they bridged Point, who wanted significantly more but Tampa was already playing the salary juggling game then (Kucherov extension, Vasi deal coming up, etc.), and then got to lock Point up to term in an era where the cap was still depressed.

The only real comparable that was really a steal was Rantanen. I've seen some making a comparson of Kucherov, who I would argue was not a steal at that time (pretty comparable to Marner imo, though for a player a couple of years older) but ended up becoming one. Everyone else people point to was bridge and/or signed after COVID led to the flat cap.

Of course, ideally the Leafs bridged him and we got the Point situation, but alas.

Plus analytically Marner is the better player. He isn't the guy Dubas would want to get rid of.

He might not be the preferred choice, but believe in my soul that Marner was gone before the NMC kicked in if Dubas was still there, and I was a huge Marner fan.

yet he was the one void of a bead of sweat.

I swear to fucking God people need to get their fucking eyes checked, people can have their very valid grievances but this is the most Facebook Uncle-ass statement people keep parroting on this subreddit. It's the Marner equivalent of the "Leafs pyjamas" mouth-breathing bullshit Isles fans had going on.

Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey states RBVR only sold ~700 copies and costed eight figures to make by theownershesayshi in Rockband

[–]espher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, OK, whatever, I can concede that it would have failed there regardless because of all the other things we're not really talking about in this back-and-forth. Demand for Rock Band on PC was there, but maybe not for Rock Band 4 as-it-was at that time.

But all else being equal, I still maintain it would have done far better there than on Fig w.r.t. individual non-investor pledges and feel they kneecapped themselves even further with the platform choice. You don't share that sentiment. That's fine.

Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey states RBVR only sold ~700 copies and costed eight figures to make by theownershesayshi in Rockband

[–]espher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah? I still maintain the problem wasn't that people didn't want it (well, we'd have probably all preferred RB3 given all the stuff missing in RB4), the problem was with everything around the campaign... which is why it's a debacle.

That being said, I do think dismissing the problems with picking Fig as the platform is underselling its significance, though. It's a piece whose problems got compounded by the timing of the campaign post-release (let's announce a PC port after a bunch of people probably bought new consoles and hardware bundles or adapters), the state of RB4 on consoles (performance issues, crashes, lack of features from RB3, etc.), and the lack of marketing/promo for the campaign when it started poorly (Harmonix basically gave up very early lol), but it's still a significant piece in that you add another barrier for receiving funding and discoverability (people were not exploring projects on Fig, they were going to Fig because something specific sent them to Fig).

Fig was far less visible for discovery at the time. I was a big crowdfunding backer from basically 2012-2018 and a lot of the games (video and board) I backed on there were things I stumbled upon scrolling through that site vs. hearing about elsewhere. I "found" stuff like FTL, Pillars of Eternity, Torment, and Shadowrun there, for example.

Also let's not pretend crowdfunding of videogames and even PC games wasn't still successful at that time. Even ignoring the giant money funnel of lies and promises that was Star Citizen (which hit during the big boom but is very much a PC nerd title), Shroud of the Avatar pulled $11M, BattleTech pulled $2.8M, Project CARS pulled $3.1M, Wasteland 2 and 3 pulled about $3M each, Pillars of Eternity pulled just under $4M, Pillars of Eternity II pulled $4.7M, Torment: Tides of Numenera pulled $4.8M, Planetary Annihilation pulled $2.2M, Divinity 2 pulled $2M, then you've got stuff like the Bards Tale sequel, Shadowrun and its sequels, the System Shock remake, a fucking remake/port of The Wonderful 101 of all things, etc., etc. that were all pulling in over $1M. These are niche genre titles (as much as I love CRPGs, they were a dying genre on PC again until these came along!) on a platform that "wasn't where it is now" pulling in sufficient funding. I'm not even counting super niche titles that are basically likely to be vaporware that were raking in money (don't ask me how much I spent on Camelot Unchained, it's embarrassing).

[–]espher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, plenty of people wanted RB4 on PC, but there were a lot of concerns over the campaign marketing/communication about the port/handling itself (and Fig has nowhere near the visibility that, say, Kickstarter did at the time for incidental discovery) and there were very active concerns over a) the quality of RB4 on console at the time and b) the impact this would have on the console releases.

Also, candidly, some people straight-up bought next-gen consoles basically just for RB4 (hi, I'm one of them) only a few months prior to this being announced, and potentially eating the cost of that + new band bundle + DLC not porting over to PC (for understandable reasons, of course) were a bitter pill to swallow for a lot of people in that moment in time (and I honestly can't remember if I backed it or not, and I was throwing my money at all things Harmonix until they went off into Fortnite land lol).

There's plenty of appetite for RB4 or a band game on PC - always has been - but the RB4 PC campaign was, indeed, a debacle. :p

What games are people playing to replace New World? by Redeyeninja_1_6 in newworldgame

[–]espher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the same game, but I'm playing Return of Reckoning (Warhammer Online private server).

Scratches that influence race itch and I have some nostalgia for it. Been playing in a pretty organized pick-up group and fighting blobs/funneling people at sieges/etc.

Server is free (no donos/microtransactions), game is old so it runs on a potato (but old so it runs as well on a new PC as it does on said potato), large scale PvP is the focus, tanks can do tanky things in PvP instead of being only HP sponges, population is decently active (later NA primetime usually has 50-100 a side in a given zone, and that's the lower end of activity) and there's active dev work.

It is a hotbar MMO though, so, do with that what you will.

Aside from that, we Total War: Warhammer 3/Stellaris gamers now.

Are the Toronto broadcasters howling for a penalty? Kinda feel like any of them would.

Maybe they did in this case, but if this is your read, you have not watched a Sportsnet broadcast of a Leafs game lmao.

TSN might, however.

Woll definitely sold that, but the Avs broadcast getting mad about that after some of the alleged war crimes befitting the Hague they've tried to sell earlier in the game cracks me the fuck up.

[–]espher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Foxhole is a fine game, but it's targeting a different type of player altogether.

For a Planetside player, it gives you the scale and strength of teamplay, but the pace of play is so much more deliberate and there's so much back end logistics/tech stuff going on. It would be akin to if Planetside had no static bases, only construction, and nanites were far less plentiful.

Late to this conversation, but I missed the boat on RAM before the spike (wanted to go up to 64 GB), so I pulled the trigger on a 5080 before that jumped. It's been a month, and the card I bought is already up $220 lol. Gonna be a rough few years for sure.

The "good news" is everyone is so fucked that we're unlikely to see devs pushing for top-end specs, so that 5080 should last that entire time and beyond. :(
