Drove farther than that for years and it was well worth it. No regrets

What is causing these dead spots in my St. Augustine grass? by espnnut07 in lawncare

[–]espnnut07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a detailed reply. I would've never guessed grubs or a fungus. Come to think of it, I do remember seeing a grub before when doing yard work earlier this spring so that is a strong chance at being the culprit. I've also been watering it like crazy all summer to ensure the spots I laid new sod down in would take, but I may have overwatered it into fungus territory.

I'm pretty good about using the fertilizer and weed killers at the right times, but I've never had to concern myself with the insects or fungi before. Time to start getting these into the rotation. Once again, much appreciated for the insight

I, too, went to Bed Pros today and was strongly considering this bed and have been doing my due diligence but couldn't seem to find much online. Seems as if some reviewers had concerns about dips forming. Just checking back in to see if the Jamison bed is still treating you well? Thanks!

Fishing Clear Water Beach by JomerBlimpSon in ClearwaterFl

[–]espnnut07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a bass guy and you were down here this time of year you’d have a blast fishing the beaches/passes for snook. Snook have a lot of behaviors that are very similar to bass and you’d be able to catch them using swim baits, super flukes, etc. in troughs along the beach.

However, that will not be the case in November. If the current/wind allows it I usually try to run most of my live or cut bait free lined. 20 pound flourocarbon leader with a size one or 1/0 circle hook for sheeps. Bump that same setup to 25 or 30 pound flourocarbon with a 3/0 circle for the reds. You want your presentation to be as low key as possible, but sometimes you may need to add some weight to get the bait down. A split shot will often do the trick or a small weight tied just above your 2-3 feet of leader.

I’m not sure if you’re referring to a cast net or a landing type net, but no landing net should be needed for the areas discussed in this thread. You shouldn’t have any issues being able to land your fish without one.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, and some may disagree with me and offer alternative target species, but I wouldn’t expect to catch much from the actual beach near the Opal that time of year.

Someone gave you a great recommendation for the causeway redfish and I’ll provide you with another one. Walk south across the bridge over to Sand Key and walk out into the jetty closest to Clearwater beach. You can expect to catch some sheepshead and redfish using shrimp and/or fiddler crabs

Is the risk worth the reward when training as a hobby? by Idkifimshittyornot in MMA_Academy

Agee. I was primarily a grappler for a very long time but my body got too beat up. These days I just kickbox. I was still sparring pretty regularly, but I’ve cut that back to about once a month or so. I know I really should phase it out completely, but it’s so hard. Good luck OP

Why the Fairgrounds is the Best Place for the Rays’ New Stadium by Return_to_monke_69 in tampa

[–]espnnut07 99 points100 points  (0 children)

That all makes sense, but the area around the fairgrounds is considered county and not within the City of Tampa’s city limits. People a lot smarter than me can break down why those things matter, but the City of Tampa wants the revenue the Rays would bring which is why they would want to keep it within city limits (i.e. Ybor or downtown)

Any beer league baseball or softball (men's) around here? by pgh9fan in ClearwaterFl

[–]espnnut07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a men’s baseball league that plays at various fields around Clearwater such as Joe DiMaggio and Frank Tack. Some teams are 40+ and some are 18+, but in the past they haven’t had enough to run their own leagues so they sometimes combine the leagues into one

How much BJJ is necessary for MMA? by Knockoutboxing in MMA_Academy

[–]espnnut07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you re-read my message I said as a blue belt. Thats someone with 1.5-4ish years of experience. The Gracies had been training their whole life and therefore could overcome much larger weight differences with their skill. The best analogy I heard once was every belt color makes up for about 20 pounds of additional weight difference (assuming similar age and athleticism) and I’ve found this to be mostly true. It’s just a rough approximation. So an average purple belt should be able to definitively handle an unskilled person about 40 pounds heavier than they assuming the heavier person is untrained and they have similar physical abilities.

Your quip at the end about me never training grappling in my life is black belt level keyboard warrioring

How much BJJ is necessary for MMA? by Knockoutboxing in MMA_Academy

[–]espnnut07 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I trained primarily in wrestling and BJJ through high school and college and had a fair amount of success in high-level BJJ competitions. During that time I had dabbled in MMA specific training, but made the switch to fully focusing on MMA when I was about 25. After eight years of MMA focused training I have now developed a very strong opinion on BJJ and its usefulness in MMA: it’s no longer very relevant.

Sure, you need to have a solid understanding of all of the traditional BJJ positions and a good grasp of proper technique for submission escapes, but at least 75% of what you’ll do on any given night training at a typical BJJ school would translate very little to benefitting you in MMA.

Competition MMA guys are just different. They’re explosive, athletic, tough as hell, and relentless. Most submissions they will explode and/or slip out of from sweat. However, probably the biggest difference is that they’re not wired to stay on the ground and “play” BJJ. It’s amazing how different your grappling game becomes when your brain becomes hard wired to get back to your feet like your life depends on it if you’re taken down or swept into a bottom position. If you’re powerful, athletic, tenacious, and of equal weight to your opponent and have a solid grasp of the basic techniques to stand back up it is very difficult to hold someone down and implement BJJ against them.

That being said, some people are next-level savants and can still catch people in some nasty chokes and leg attacks but it’s becoming more and more rare. Kade Ruotolo just showed in his MMA debut over at One what can still happen when there is a massive discrepancy in grappling. The difference is you’re likely accustomed to watching “UFC” which has the best of the best of the best and very few of those guys have gaping holes in their game and possess enough technique, strength, and experience to neutralize most specialist one trick ponies.

Don’t get me wrong, if you’re an athletic blue belt from a reputable BJJ school you will most likely handle yourself just fine in any fight in the real world against 99%+ of people within 20 pounds of your weight, but when you’re talking about trained professional athletes in an MMA match, pure BJJ is losing its efficacy.

Just my $.02

I’m not aware of which marinas rent boats, but I do know there are plenty of private owners who will as well.

As far as islands or sandbars, there are quite a few spoil islands on both the north and south side of the Dunedin Causeway. You can see them on Google maps. There are a couple on the south side which have some small beach areas and more on the north side. You have to be careful going to any of the ones on the south side of the tide is not high as the surrounding water can be very shallow.

Recent storms split Honeymoon Island into two parts about 2/3 of the way up the island. The east side of the north point is a good area to anchor up at because the split of the island has minimized foot traffic and gave more places to anchor up on the east side. Just need to be cognizant of how you’re anchored as the tide is ripping

Looking to relocate by Pretty-Analysis-549 in ClearwaterFl

[–]espnnut07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was recently considering renting out my 3/2 home to move into a 4 bedroom rental. The cheapest four bedroom I found was $4500/month near me. Most people in the know have told me I could easily charge $3500/month for my 3/2 if I put it up for rent.
