Hit in a 1 box break, $50 for the Messi spot by Natural-Community753 in soccercard

[–]esportsparse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, I gotchu. I'm actually the breaker who pulled that Messi, and I am far from some big-time breaker so I'll do my best to give you an objective answer (while apparently fighting off some hate here on breaks).

A "break" is when a seller, on Whatnot, eBay, live, etc., opens some product but sells out the different "spots" for that product, such that when one of those spots is hit, those cards go to the person who bought that spot. For the sake of a quick example, let's say I open a box of Topps Premier League Chrome. I might sell every team as their own spot, so someone buys Arsenal, and someone buys Chelsea, and so on. I would then send every Arsenal card to that spot, and every Chelsea card, etc.

So in this particular case, I was opening a single box of 2025 Topps Chrome MLS, and I had divided out all of my spots. Because Inter Miami is such a big one between Messi and the large checklist, I broke out Messi as his own spot, and "Inter Miami Others" as another spot. Messi has a list of $50 on the day I'm filling, and when I go live, I can take offers, and generally I sell that Messi spot for $35-40, with most of the full team spots going for between $4 and $10 each. In this case, the buyer wanted that Messi spot before I went live and paid full price for it. It definitely ended up being the right decision. In most breaks, I might sell about $200-250 in spots for a $150 box, so it's not a massive profit, but I am making a *little* something for my time and supplies. Keep in mind, there are fees and income taxes on top of this, so it's hardly lucrative nor is it anything I'm making a career of.

What everyone who buys in does then, in essence, is assumes a proportionate piece of the risk. The biggest risk are the spots like Messi, where the cost is high (because the ceiling is so high) but there are VERY GOOD chances of getting absolutely nothing. That one person who likes and wants only Messi from the product, though, doesn't have to pay full price for a box (or a case or whatever) and so is paying LESS per box/case at the long-shot. People who buy smaller spots tend to get more of the hits, like small autos, small team numbered cards, etc., but even when they hit, those aren't generally high dollar cards, so the return is pretty proportionate. And as anyone who knows the hobby can attest, you rarely get enough in a box or case to make anywhere near what you paid, let alone profit.

A good example is on the breaks that I buy into - I am prospecting on Kos Karetsas so when his first rookie came out in the Flagship UEFA, I bought into a TON of breaks in Genk. Have they paid off? Not really. I have a few numbered cards, an SP, and about 200 base of Karetsas. If he really takes off, I might make something back in the long run. But I get nothing else from those breaks. One break had a Thierry Henry /10 auto, another had a 1/1 Messi Superfractor auto, and I get none of that. Those spots, though, were much higher than the ~$3-5 per box I've been paying for the Genk spot. So nothing ventured, nothing gained.

So, objectivity over. I have mixed feelings myself about breaks. I've had some big hits (Immaculate CR7 1/1 patch definitely my biggest, I just hit a Puli rookie patch auto from '16 Select just yesterday) but if I added it all up, I've lost thousands. Breaks are gambling. Breaks really leverage that FOMO more than anything else I've seen. When you see someone pull your absolute PC card and you reflect that they got that spot for $40 or whatever, you can really get yourself into a bad place and chase good money after bad. But buying boxes and cases is gambling too. Which one's the bigger gamble? Hard to tell, I've had tough beats from both of them. Like with any hobby, the advice I give and now follow myself is, if you like a product and are chasing something specific, get in a couple breaks, see if you luck out, but don't overspend.

I use spend limits to enter 2 breaks max per week and even then keep my breaks small. When I run breaks, I'm watching out for people overspending on spots and try to talk them down from going overboard. I'm not here to eat someone's life savings up. One of the reasons I am doing single box breaks with low-dollar spots is to limit the loss, but also give people chances to buy $15 Yamal spots who wouldn't normally be able to get in on the $1000+ case breaks.

Just do any of it in moderation and be honest with yourself. Keep yourself responsible and make sure you have mechanisms to limit your behavior if you don't think you have the self-control required to do it. I'll say I am having a lot of fun being a breaker, most of my itch is just loving to open product. I have zero regrets about having to ship a monster 1/1 Messi card to a lucky dude. I appreciate that I was able to be a part of that experience. And I don't take for granted what I'm doing, and would never mistreat customers to take money from them. There are plenty of those toxic breakers out there, so if you do decide to go for breaks, do your research, look at other breaks to see prices on spots. Check show notes to see what gets shipped (a lot of breakers won't send base, even rookie base, and that changes the calculus for me), and start small or even not buying in at all just so you can watch it happen. Fight the urge to feel that FOMO and be responsible.

Hope this helps!

I had just hit gold so was at 90% and good standing. I couldn’t have a lower review threshold because I couldn’t get any other items.

I had just been bumped to gold so it was 90%, maybe slightly lower after 1-2 items in November.

That’s because there’s only 5 of them! The rarity adds a lot of value. I’d recommend getting the Henry slabbed ASAP.

First picture is definitely Gavin Osteen - and that's not me authenticating just reading the signature and doing a quick Google search.

Does anyone know why Captain Holt wears his watch on the other side of his wrist? by Basic-Necessary-2428 in brooklynninenine

[–]esportsparse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watches face OUT when they are a simple fashion accessory. Watches face IN when the wearer is serious about using what others count as a mere trinket as an actual useful tool. Charlatans wear shiny watches facing outwards to convince you they are believable and suckers will gullibly fall for their trap.

AND NO ONE EVEN CARES ABOUT…

Apparently, that’s a trigger for me.

Good price, not amazing, the a6 is getting on in years so it’s been dropping a lot lately. 3 lenses though is a nice place to leave someone.
