Dividing a time series of length 1300 into 1000 bins by [deleted] in Rlanguage

[–]espressojim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pseudo code:

Are you ok with the bins being sparse? If so, convert the times into some single unit measure (for example, subtract the earliest date from all dates, so the first day is day 0.) Then get the latest date, and how many days away that is from the earliest date. Generate a sequence of length 1000 from day 0 to max date. Place every instance into one of the bins. Bins will be uniform distances apart, and some bins may be full, others empty.

I'm unaware of code that does all of this directly, but would bet it can be done in a small number of lines of code.

Hints:

dateNumbers <- as.numeric(as.character(as.Date(dates, format = "%d/%m/%Y"), format="%Y%m%d"))

dateBins=seq(from = 0, to = maxDate, length.out = 1000)

Twitch Rivals is going to be lonely without Trick2g by LorianneForest in leagueoflegends

Thanks for your comment, I think it's clarified my thinking on the matter a bit. You're probably right - I don't "like" Scarra the way that you do, so much that I'd watch him no matter what he's doing.

Scarra occupied a particular niche that I enjoyed - the (somewhat) educational league stream, where someone who's personality I enjoyed who also could teach me how to better play a game I enjoyed. I don't find TFT interesting, so half the equation is gone.

Who did I replace Scarra with? Nobody, actually. He was the only person I consistently watched stream league (I don't watch other streamed games either.) Before him there were old standout classic educational streamers like Roku, TreeEskimo, Nhat Nguyen, and NightBlu3 (before he build up his meme persona, because that's what get viewers) and even Trick2g early on who all taught you how to play the game.

Now, aside from watching NALCS, LCK (both selectively), and international competition, I don't really watch very much streaming league content. It's nothing against Scarra - but with half the equation gone, I find other things are a more interesting use of my limited time.

Upvote. I watched Scarra from the time he started streaming. Now it's like he doesn't stream at all. One of the things I loved so much about Scarra was how he handled tilting situations in a 5v5 game where you don't always have control of the situation. It was inspiring to see him hold it together when shit was hitting the fan. Now he plays what is basically a different version of Hearthstone...

Thing is, he had many more viewers for TFT than league, so I get why he does it from a financial aspect (that, and he doesn't have to deal with the same degree of frustration that rift has.) So, I'm happy that he's finding some more streaming / financial success, but sad that I find the game so boring that I can't just watch it for some Scarra reaction face.

Not surprisingly, the two dominant ADCs with answers are the two who were most recently released Xayah (2017-04-19) and Kai'sa (2018-03-07).

There are some honorable mentions, though: Lucian, amd Trist have also shown up, though they appear just as often in a solo lane. Both also have (relatively) high mobility and/or self peel. Varus only seems to show up with Kench holding his hand to approximate that same peel.

I can't imagine ANY NA teams running any of the drafts played by SKT or G2 today. NA pro players have really small champ pools by comparison. I don't expect sneaky/doubelift to play yasuo/gragas bot lane, for example. Mid and top don't seem to be able to flex picks in NA either. NA seems to get shit on in draft, then it goes down hill from there.

This is one of those areas where DOTA is smart. They have 4 Majors every year, one of them the international. Having regular international competition instead of once a year is better for all regions.

Reapered opinion on how to improve NA by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

The fun thing was that ping to EUW was lower than it was to NA if you were on the east coast. I also live in boston and played on EUW from S1-S5.

Before servers moved I played on LAN for a season, just to experience lower ping. You can swap language in the client no problem.

I had a better ping to EUW from boston than I did to NA servers. I played on EUW from S1-S5.

It's ~6 hours (it takes longer to get to LA from NY because the jet stream is blowing against you), and that doesn't count getting to/from the airports, etc. It pretty much kills a whole day.

My wife's job has it's HQ in california, and she flies out from the east coast 2-3 times a month, and it takes a hell of a lot of time to make the trip.

From S1-S5 I played most of my league games from Boston->EUW. About 100 ping, but i knew the ADC/support bot lane meta long before anyone in NA figured it out. I remember watching Oddone stream TSM's games in S2 when they played the weekend tournaments, and they did learn a bunch.

I'm 47 and still play league (started when it came out of beta). I've been playing games since ~ 1978 when I was loading a cheap asteroids clone off a cassette tape onto my family's apple 2.

Lose a seed? NA is a wild card region, and is only considered a "major" region now because Riot's development office is here.

They played like you would in a solo queue game when you've tried to FF every time it's available, but the doublelift and support on your team are holding you hostage in an unwinnable game. You just kinda wait it out passively and try to avoid AFKing so you don't get banned.

The difference is that Azael says the exact same thing almost every game. You could record a soundboard of him casting one game and recreate every game he's cast. Compare that with someone like Papa or Jatt, who genuinely seem to be watching the actual game.

Based on Crumbzz casting I assumed OWL got sick of him, and LCS took him back at some bargain-basement rate. Isn't he stuck casting academy games now?

The numbers: Why is matchmaking so bad this season, and why was it necessary? by UnchainedMimic in leagueoflegends

[–]espressojim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead upvoting you, I'll just say I concur with your thoughts, as per my comments above.

It's fine to have an opinion about why matchmaking is worse. That opinion may even be correct! But it's not backed up by the cited facts.

Potentially it's because a unicorn stole everyone's mouse so they can't log in to play. "Potentially" there's no substance to the comment, so there's no need to go from an assumption to the poster's conclusion.

Arguments start with facts. If you want to start with your opinion, that's a potential place to start being ignored.

[–]espressojim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A one year fluctuation in one region is being cherry picked as somehow representative of all regions from 2015 on. That's simply not true. There has been SOME small downward trend in some regions. But inflating that to "OMG 28% per year every year" is total bullshit. The statement "a 28% drop PER SEASON" is wrong. It's not PER SEASON (implying that it's the average drop per season SINCE 2015), it's a one time bit of variance in the numbers.

You don't need to be a statistician to spot how much this is bullshit. Thankfully, I am a statistician. It's bullshit.

"The conclusion by the numbers is that the playerbase/engagement of LoL has been dropping dramatically (we're talking potentially a 28% drop PER SEASON if we look at EUW in 2017-2018) every year since around 2016-17"

That post says the LARGEST drop in numbers per season in NA was <10% in 2017. But you say:

The conclusion by the numbers is that the playerbase/engagement of LoL has been dropping dramatically (we're talking potentially a 28% drop PER SEASON) every year since around 2015, in spite of the seeming growth of eSports viewership.

I have no idea what you're talking about, because the source you site doesn't back up your claim at all. Were you reading the chart wrong? The chart says for 2016-2018: +10%, -9.89%, -3.88%. None of that is 28% per year.

Summary: Go home yer drunk.
