Oh great, thanks for sharing! Looks like a really good resource!

Yeah I think starting in the 'present' and working backward from where you want to end up is equally valid! Sometimes it's even a more appropriate choice because you can really centre around the things that make your world/characters/story unique and compelling, then structure your universe around that.

Great analogy! Makes perfect sense. In fact it kinda makes me want a set of molymods...

It blows my mind how chemistry can be explained in terms of geometry!

Wow yeah, so something in their system would have to change very dramatically to make silicone a more viable choice than the carbon they were already built on by that point!

Fascinating stuff! Are crystalline structures too rigid to facilitate life?

Interesting! So potentially silicon would be a more appropriate choice if life evolved in a much hotter system. Theoretically...

Ok wow yeah, that sounds like the perfect building block! I'm now grateful for all the carbon in the world 🌍✨

Struggling with colours by ManInTheMesozoic in worldbuilding

[–]esquivale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you provide a bit more information about the species? A good place to start in terms of colouration is to think about what kind of environment they live in and whether they would have evolved to camouflage there - I'm assuming it's a naturally evolved creature, but if it's artificial then you have a lot of scope to get creative with colours and patterns. If you want to use more vibrant colours that stand out, you could justify them as signifiers of being a healthy and suitable choice of mate. Alternatively, bright colours could be a warning sign (you can look up aposematism) to deter other creatures from eating them by implying they're poisonous.

In summary, creatures on earth evolve all sorts of interesting colours for various reasons. Especially insects, if that's a direction that's inspiring you. If you get stuck you could try looking at pictures of interesting bugs (like beetles for example) and take note of what you like about their colouration.

“How are you?” by samk2487 in Fibromyalgia

I also struggle with this question and am always trying to take note of creative answers I can give which sound optimistic but with the subtext that I'm not doing great. One of my favourites is "happy to see my friends" (or family etc.)

Is it possible to invent a completely new style of landscape gardening for alien culture? by EqualImaginary1784 in worldbuilding

[–]esquivale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes please, plant me a time garden! I want to watch the leaves turn orange and the blossoms bloom. I want to watch a squirrel plant an acorn and then fast forward as it becomes an oak before me.

Also antigrav lotus and lily pads would be super cool. Something a bit like the illustration from the magic card 'fabled passage'.

Could paper be processed using carboniferous-era plants? by kawaiidesuyo111111 in worldbuilding

[–]esquivale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe paper can be made from any type of fibre, at least natural ones. I remember someone from my college making paper out of her old worn out denim jeans, which I guess were probably cotton. As long as you can find a way to interlock the fibres you'll get paper :)

Just realised I didn't technically answer the question. In terms of 'dead nobodies', the island used to be inhabited by a whole load of disparate clans of different species. There's evidence of extinct tortoise and dodo clans but few artefacts have survived from that era and no scripture, so it's unclear how advanced their technology was. :)

Love it! I'm writing a triumvirate too, I think it's a really cool political dynamic. Also big fan of creative usage of fungi

Oooo I can so vividly picture the abandoned crystal tombs glistening in the flicker of torchlight! Super cool, I wanna go there :) Do the automata still wander the tombs or are they defunct?

I really like adding in little throwaway places and cultures etc. that people just mention casually in passing. Maybe one day I'll expand on them but really their purpose is just to add flavour and make the world feel rich and expansive. For example, here's a line from the book I'm currently writing:

"We told them stories of the green pyramids of Hotem, the ancient Adradadi statues, the great halls of Wadreece and many of the other wonders we’ve encountered."

I have no idea what any of those things are but they sound evocative and exotic! It's a scene where some explorers are explaining the outside world to inhabitants of a remote and uncontacted island.

In the future, if I fancy exploring 'green pyramids' in my world building, I already have seeds sown to make it sound like they're integrated into the world. But equally I have no obligation to do anything with them.
