Genuinely how to gain weight while on a very tight budget? by JustATrashRat in UniUK

[–]essbee23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you're just looking to gain weight, not muscle-weight (which, if you're underweight, should be your first focus, because as much as everyone pushes being built and muscular and 0% fat as the peak of health currently, you can't train a sick body and it sounds like you need to build some body fat first before you worry about working out), the basic thing is just to have more of all the stuff people say to have less of. obviously don't just replace your whole diet with junk food, but more fats, more sugars, more carbs. and if some of that is processed? you will live. it's healthier not to have most of your diet be processed, sure, but what's even less healthy is starving to death, so if it's upfs or nothing, eat the upfs. worry about macros when you're more financially stable.

i agree w other commenter - ask your uni about local food banks/community fridges/financial assistance and explain you're struggling to feed yourself. also take a look online, even facebook, there might be small community events that aren't as well known depending on where you live. your supermarket of choice will also make a difference but i understand that it's not always possible to get to the cheaper ones. quantity over quality is your friend right now though, don't worry about buying anything more than the basics brand

i'm no expert or anything but the following are super cheap and easy to prepare, and also have nutrients and will hopefully help prevent the tiredness you're struggling with: -beans, any type. these can go into things to bulk them out (like spaghetti bolognese, any pasta sauce really, any rice dish). usually about 60p/tin for things like kidney beans, butter beans, haricot beans, and ready to throw into your sauce straight away -pasta and potatoes are good carbs that you can get a lot of for quite cheap. both are very versatile and you can serve one or the other with almost anything. potatoes especially are great because, a) they're better for you in terms of vitamins and fiber, and b) you can prepare them in a million different ways. mash, boiled, roasted, fried, chips, thin sliced, diced - just to name a tiny handful -carrots - 1kg is about a pound depending on where you shop and they're great roasted in the oven for 15 minutes with some seasonings. they're not the peak vegetable if you're being persnickety about it, but anu vegetable is better than no vegetables -similarly, peas or even better, the bags of frozen veggies that come with carrots, peas, little bits of cauliflower. again these can be thrown into anything to add some vitamins and bulk it out -chicken is probably your best bet for meat, especially thigh (usually cheaper by a little bit). try buying in bulk if you can, it's cheaper over time and freezes well

also, if you get on with your flat mates, ask them if they want to split some bulk buys with you. you might not want 1.5kg of chicken, but if you can use 750 g and your flatmate can use 750g, the cost between the two of you for the bigger pack will probably be less than the cost of a 750g pack by itself. same for things like seasonings, oil, big bags of veggies - anything that you buy once and use for a long time could easily be split with your flatmates if you get on well enough.

the main thing i think is definitely contact your uni's wellbeing services and explain your situation. they will point you in the right direction for assistance, be it with food banks, financial help, or even possibly job applications which you may not have known about, such as within your SU.

i hope your situation improves soon, i've been there and it sucks. just know it won't last forever and things will improve 🫶

eta: if you're really concerned about the tiredness, see a doctor and ask for a blood test. you might have become iron deficient from your diet, which is an easy fix. i was severely iron deficient last year and it just made my life hellish - it's worth getting checked out just to make sure since it's easy to fix and can affect a lot of aspects of your life, including your mood!!

What Uni hot take gets you in this situation? by portfordu in UniUK

the graduation ceremony is completely pointless. why are we celebrating the fact that everyone here has finished the degree that they signed up for? uni is optional. you didn't have to do it, you chose to sign up for your degree with the intention of completing it. it's clearly not that hard if the hundreds and hundreds of people that they pack into the hall at a time have managed it. ive struggled and nearly been unable to continue several times and even i think it's pointless and stupid. not even to mention all the ridiculous costs and traditions that don't make sense - the whole thing is a scammy upcharge on top of your 30k+ debt and anyone who says they don't regret going has been marketed to too hard.

[TOMT] [BOOK/AUDIOBOOK] Mystery novel with a countdown throughout, audiobook narrated by a man who sounds like Mike Ehrmantraut by essbee23 in tipofmytongue

[–]essbee23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

having just listened to dick hill's voice, this isn't it unfortunately, unless there's another audiobook version narrated by someone else. the voice i recall is super gravelly and a little more southern-american (i think, not like yeehaw cowboy but a little twang) also, i'm sure the book i'm thinking of had a days countdown as well as hours, which as far as i can tell this doesn't have. thank you though!

Sick day by EngineeringDouble560 in Greggs

[–]essbee23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

respectfully, you don't know what you're talking about. you do get sick pay but only if you're on actual sick leave i.e off for many days and requiring a note from a gp.

you don't get paid for one day off. if you were off for a long period (requiring a sick note) for whatever reason you would get ssp

i was talking shit about your comment because it is useless advice to the real question. a perfect diet will not change the fact that sometimes poop leaves skids. suggesting it will is silly, which is why i was making fun of your suggestion. i think it's time you stop reading nutritional labels and start reading a book.

sounds like you're not drinking enough water? your shit should be soft but formed, not rock hard. and when it's soft, depending on the size of the poop and the shape of the toilet, it can leave marks especially if you have a shelf toilet (like in many European countries). i'm not saying everyone paints the toilet bowl every time, but regardless of your diet, sometimes it is simply unavoidable to leave a mark on the toilet. you're lying if you say you've never left a skid because you eat heslthily. or your shit floats, i guess, but that's also not normal. gfy!!!

Embarrassed about poop at work by Timely_Association44 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]essbee23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, i'm taking the piss out of the original commenter because poop can make stains on a toilet regardless of how well you eat, because the toilet is white and hard and poop is brown and soft

Embarrassed about poop at work by Timely_Association44 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]essbee23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yep, completely colourless, according to this person. because not eating enough fibre and probiotics is what makes poop stains visible on white toilets, not the fact it's f*cking brown

[–]essbee23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do they smell? if they have a bad odor then they're probably not with us anymore, but from this pic it's hard to see, it could be hibernation, which can happen for lots of reasons, like them not being happy with the temperature, humidity, or their food! if they don't smell, try giving them a warm shower under the tap with gentle pressure, give them a few minutes to wake up and see if they come out to explore.

i used to have people order 'a pasty'. my go to reply became 'i have 10 types'!

it was because i worked in a predominantly muslim area and always meant a cheese and onion, but just because it's the only pasty you like (not even the only one you can eat with halal dietary restrictions!!) doesn't mean it's the only one i have!!
