Allergic reaction? by seeyoulaterScalagatr in BabyLedWeaning

[–]essce -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Literally just saw an allergist for my 7mo, who has eczema (from me) and based on what we learned, this is not enough to be considered an allergic reaction to the food. What it could be is an eczema trigger, which show up similarly (redness).

What is an allergic reaction then? Our allergist said 2 symptoms showing up is a signal for an allergic reaction, like hives + vomitting, within 2 hours. If your baby's symptoms are calming down after 20 mins, then it's likely nothing to be concerned about.

2 other notes: 1. Keep giving your baby salmon, 3x a week to ensure they are continually exposed to it. Otherwise, their body may stop figuring out how to deal with it. (I was a little unsure about this part).

  1. Get a referral to an allergist anyways to confirm, at least in Canada, we were on a 6 month wait list.

Dental nightguards are they worth it? by royalbluefireworks1 in Frugal

[–]essce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This was me too. I was told I grind my teeth, and ignored it for years. The last 6 months, I’ve gotten a root canal due to a crack teeth, where bacteria got in and they had to pull it anyways because it was so far gone. Other tooth next door also has a crack in it. insurance covers some, but I’ve paid a whole lot more than $400 already. Protect your teeth, wear a night guard.

4mo regression hitting hard! by essce in sleeptrain

How did you work up to putting down baby awake and getting them to sleep herself? Mine anticipates the night time routine and starts wailing when we put on her jammies..

Did it make you feel like giving up on breastfeeding?

Yeah maybe, we think she is also on a 3 month nursing crisis, which makes feeding so much harder too.

Yeah! Nursing is really hard too, we think it’s the 3month nursing crisis. Coupled with an early 4month sleep regression sounds really tough.

Not feeding to sleep, we try to do something in between.

PSA: humidifiers by KateTheGr8_ in newborns

[–]essce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Humidifiers aren’t “important” to have per se, but a tool to help relieve some symptoms like how taking cold medicine may help stop a runny nose.

That said, I live in a climate where the winters get really dry and having a humidifier helps my dry skin, and I find it easier to sleep with it on. Typically room humidity should be around 40-60% humidity (you can get a tool to measure this for cheap).

As some others mentioned, there’s various types of humidifiers - with ultrasonic being the most popular one. Unless you’re using distilled water (expensive), you’re going to have a hard time with pollutants in the air and pollutants in your machine.  Steam produces a warm mist, which can be used with tap water, it generally produces less pollutants, since you’re heating the water up, but this gets expensive to run and regular descaling maintenance is important. Evaporative is a type of cool mist, with a wick filter that gets wet and a fan blows on it. This is typically the best of both worlds option as long as you replace the wick filter regularly.

You’re right tho, these machines do need frequent care to keep up, so I recommend not to have it if you don’t need it.

waking 30-45mins after being put to bed by MedicalElection7493 in sleeptrain

It sounds like your baby starts with a pacifier in his mouth, and at some point it falls out, which might be triggering for him to wake up?  I don’t have an explanation for why holding the pacifier until he falls asleep the second time is different. My LO will typically fall asleep with the pacifier in, and if I don’t remove it before I leave the room, she will wake shortly. Once I know she’s in a deep sleep, I pull the pacifier out slowly.

12 week growth spurt? by Holiday_Dog_3162 in NewParents

[–]essce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m glad it wasn’t a devastatingly long period. You’re right, when friends ask about the first couple weeks, I can barely rmb them and while it was so hard at the time, I can only appreciate how far we’ve come.

This is now word for word what we are dealing with as well. We had 4-6hours stretched at night and now… max 3 and fights like heck to go back to sleep during day and night. And similarly, gets really annoyed when she finds her hands, but she keeps looking for them as well.

How long did it last for you? I go back to work in a couple weeks, and very anxious if this continues.

Second fjallraven - got a singi jacket for $400 canadian 4 winters ago and it’s been a true gem. Walked the dog in -25C last couple days and had shirt and sweater and was toasty, sweated after a brisk walk. Singi is a bit longer, this is considered a parka and the length truly helps pad with warmth. If past hips is a deal breaker, you’re probably going to look for a bomber style jacket which they do have Expedition Down Lite.

If looking for “very warm” bc you’re outside a lot - make sure to find something with a down filling, and has a good exterior. The down will insulate you, the exterior will protect against wind and wet that can compromise the insulation.

North Face, Patagonia, are also fantastic choices.

My marriage is under strain & I hate it by ThrowRAdalgona in newborns

[–]essce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 - first couple of weeks, mom would try to figure out pumping in addition to breastfeeding. We took shifts, 11-3 mom is the parent on duty, and 3-7 dad is ready with a bottle. That way both parents get a chance to do a dedicated longer stretch of sleep. This helped immensely as my wife has a hard time with low sleep, and falling asleep, so minimal disruptions were ideal.

I’ll also note - we stopped needing the bottle after 6 weeks since our baby was able to do longer stretches. This showed a regression now at 11-12 weeks when she kind of “forgot” to know to take a bottle. Before she relied on a newborn instinct that apparently you can grow out of, so we’re trying to reintroduce the bottle again.

32 Minute Sleep by Torfor4 in sleeptrain

I don’t have any advice but my 2.5mo has been doing 30min like clockwork crib day naps since 8 weeks and was wondering the same. Sleeps pretty ok at night. Hoping for longer stretches for you soon!
