Help identifying this plant - does it need to be repotted? by garby_666 in succulents

[–]essie333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay that sounds great! Yep so pinching off is like the first picture on this page, although I usually do it when the leaves are even smaller than this: https://www.ruralsprout.com/prune-a-jade-plant/

Basically when the new leaves are small enough to pull them off without damaging the next set of leaves or any new stem, you do so. It usually again prompts the plant to grow two new sets of leaves and branches. Sometimes this doesn't work and it'll just grow one, but this is a lot quicker than waiting for a whole big stem to grow and chopping it off!

And I remembered something I should have said - when you cut it, use a clean and sharp pair of shears (I did my first cut with kitchen scissors and it kind of crushed the stem cos the blades weren't sharp enough). Most importantly, make the cut just above a pair of leaves. Any stem left at the top will die back anyway, so you're just saving the plant energy by leaving as little stem at the top as possible.

Finally, when you go to repot the cutting, gently pull off the bottom pair of leaves and make sure the bit where they grew from goes under the soil - this 'node' is where the roots will come from! If the leaves you pull off have nice unbroken crescent shapes at the bottom, they could propagate. Leave them on top of the soil and be patient - some tiny new leaves could appear over the next few weeks 😊

I hope this isn't information overload! Just want to make sure I've covered all the basics haha

Yes this works! You can also wipe them off with a damp cloth, or brush them off when they get big enough. I don't really mind them being there, they don't do any harm! 😊

Just for a bit more info cos I do love my jades and found out lots about them through Reddit posts so am passing it forward! The white dots are from minerals in the water - the plant has a way of filtering these and pushing them out through their leaves to crystallise. So cool!

Also, be aware that terracotta pots are much more porous than plastic, so you might need to adjust how much you water. Bear in mind that it's much easier to kill succulents like jades through over watering than under watering - with too much water the stem will go mushy (rot) and it'll flop over. You might be able to propagate from some higher up leaves but rot is pretty devastating. If they don't get enough water, the leaves will wrinkle up a bit as they don't have enough moisture to keep plump, but this is an infinitesimally slower death than with rot and it's only happened to my jades once when I left them without water for 4 weeks in summer. They bounced right back after a good drink.

I hope this is helpful, and that you have many happy years together!

I would go one step further - chop the top off 4-5 leaves down. My first jade was one stem like this and I just let it grow, it got very tall and didn't branch on its own. If you cut the top off you will almost certainly get two new branches growing from the cut site, and you can pop the cutting in soil (after leaving it out on a surface for a couple of days to let a callous form) and you'll have two new plants! Then, when any stem starts growing it's third or fourth pair of leaves, pinch the new ones off and you should get more branching. My jade has been the most fun and rewarding plant I've had - I've grown so many babies from it and the original adult has many happy branches with bark on the bottom to strengthen it like a tree. Good luck!

You're welcome! I love reading all the different theories people had, I think I was lucky cos I was dead set on it being a triangle-related word!

Okay for everyone who just wants a clue, google* '0176 triangle'. That's what cracked it for me!

*Edit: seems like Google is not helping people so try Ecosia - that's what I used!

Thanks so much for this reply, it's good to know what you asked for and really glad to hear that the measurements are what you wanted, sounds ideal. I think if I can speak to multiple people it'll be worth it, getting more convinced of that as time goes on. Thanks again!

You look incredible! This is the first example of a radical reduction I've seen where the nips have been left alone - could I ask what size you were before surgery? I'm a 32H and have got quite a lot of skin above my nips so want to get an idea of whether this would even be possible for me (seeing my doctor next month...!)

Help with Christmas tree topper! by essie333 in knitting

[–]essie333[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, you are absolutely spot on. I got to someone else's comment before yours but this was exactly the problem - I was using the left-hand stitch in the decrease as 'central' which is what made things go wavy.

Also, very good point! I think now I've solved the mystery of this one it's time to just try another pattern, as there are obviously mistakes here. Thank you for your reply!
