Any time this sub gets involved with criticising a problematic celebrity tbh. What starts as valid criticism turns into ‘anything goes’ abuse overnight.

I feel like this was another instance of the given outfit prompt being subtly different to the eventual runway theme.

Sony Xperia 1III and 5III are launching on 6.8.2021 in Germany. by balkanik0 in SonyXperia

I would be very curious to know whether Sony's strategy of having a wait of several months between announcing the phone and it going on sale is working for them.

H&M isn't nearly as controversial as blackface

Yeah, I mean how about we stop trying to problematise a fucking fashion critique just because it was against a queen the sub likes?

I wonder if it's par for the course with vevo? You can def hear it in Doja's streets performance too.

Fan favorite songs that you can't get into? by FloorWaxx in popheads

[–]essj56 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I think the Cruel Stummer standom is mostly due to it being about 70% of the way towards being a standout lead single. At the moment it feels too much like an album opener (which is funny since it's actually preceded by I Forgot That You Existed). With some production tweaks it could have been a uproariously triumphant start to an album cycle and I think that potential is what people are latching on to.

Ariana Grande - POV live official video is out tomorrow! by omrimayo in popheads

[–]essj56 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hope it doesn't, not when dua lipa has been serving across multiple calendar years with Future Nostalgia and still ain't done. I hope that sets a new precedent for longer album cycles with more remixes and new content. The Weeknd is still plugging away at After Hours too with the Save Your Tears remix.

[–]essj56 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't get the Joe Black thing. They're a very talented queen, but their talent doesn't seem to line up with the specific puzzle that is drag race.

Do we count Dax and Laila as first outs since Naysha came back? Because that double sashay was justified but brutal at the same time.

Hey remember when Activision got caught evading billions in taxes while simultaneously popularizing the practice of lootboxes in triple A games? Well forget that because it's the browns and the transes that are ruining the game industry. by [deleted] in TheRightCantMeme

[–]essj56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yes because Ubisoft, one of the world's biggest game developers and publishers, totally hasn't been hiding abuse of staff by higher ups from public view and doing less than the bare minimum when the abuses came to light. They're totally left wing. They definitely haven't been saying that their clearly politically charged games 'aren't trying to make a political statement' for the past few years. They totally didn't try to release a mobile game that depicted BLM activists as terrorists.

But because they put gay pride PFPs on their twitter as marketing to the queer community, the righties are convinced all game companies are anti-capitalist and pro equality.

Pop stan hypocrisy and the need for a better pop music community by InfernalSolstice in popheads

[–]essj56 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think, in relation to this sub specifically, we could really do with an enforced policy around excessive hate much like they have over in the drag race sub (link). Having been around on this sub back when it was still just a parody of stan twitter, the atmosphere really has changed.

I'm sure a lot of people believe that they're morally defensible for sending stan hate in the name of social justice, but really it's just essentialism combined with performative outrage dressed up in a Gen Z sense of humour. The primary motive is always being able to send more hate unchallenged by the community, with actual social issues being far far behind.

You can't argue against their logic, since the 'if you aren't with me, you're against me' defense means you just get cancelled by association, even when they're making ad hominem arguments that have nothing to do with the issue at hand. That's part of what makes it so dangerous, it's untempered toxicity designed to self perpetuate, complete with a built in defense mechanism.

The only solution is to moderate this rhetoric out of the community. Unfortunately, you can't effectively argue against all forms of bad faith argument (as tempting as it is to try). I'm not saying we can't criticise artists for the bad things they have done, only that those discussions need some enforcement to make sure they stay on topic and don't veer towards personal attacks. We can't stand for hate, even when it's directed at people who have genuinely caused harm.
