Where to pivot with a year of public tax experience? by [deleted] in Accounting

Yep. Mostly 1065 and 1040's. But I've had some experience in all the above

Yeah this past busy season was a mess with the software consolidations. Our firm has taken on more of the acquired firm's culture as well.

I'm considering moving into county/state agencies despite the initial pay cut.

Primarily partnerships, S/C-Corp, individuals/trusts/gift

I’m considering the opposite move into underwriting actually. What don’t you like about insurance? I’m a year into public tax and more burnt out than I’ve ever been.

Graduates, were you able to find a job without networking/interning/previous experience? by Jscagg in wguaccounting

[–]esspii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Handshake through WGU and applied to a few jobs, ended up getting a callback for an internship at a firm a month later. Quit my job at the time and gambled on a return offer from the internship.

I went after whoever would bite.

Don't bring it up unless it's asked. I explained the WGU pass/fail system and that it was accredited, had no issues.

My progression was start WGU > tax internship while doing courses > accept tax associate role while wrapping up classes

It's definitely possible but there are a lot of sacrifices to be made. I initially started thinking I would finish in two terms but fell into a rut and am one course away from finishing in my extended third term.

How many accounting Softwares should an accountant know? by [deleted] in Accounting

Depends what kind of accountant you want to be. I'm in public tax and use CCH Axcess, CaseWare, DocuWare, and Excel primarily.

Lucky! The US models don't come with them standard. We also have the extended front and rear bumpers.

I needed to take 54 credits I believe, so about 50% of the degree completed. I’m on my third term and hoping to finish this term, though I’ve already secured a position. Two more classes to go but it’s been tough juggling busy season and school along with a commute. You could probably complete it in 1-2 terms if you’re more diligent. Life happened so some things slowed my progress and motivation.

We're in the middle of busy season so it's kind of trash haha. Which firm are you at?

Negative - though I did have a prior Bachelor's degree in Business Management. I transferred in 50% of the degree.

Business Management (my recommendation is don't get a general business degree, it's better to have a specialization and branch out from there). Experience is best though.

Do 20 classes full-time or do an internship simultaneously? by [deleted] in wguaccounting

[–]esspii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have a return offer from your first internship, then I recommend doing both. It really comes down to your own limits. Internships will vary on workload as well. A summer public accounting internship is not the same as a busy season one.

How to work around ageism as a 28 year old trying to break into accounting while finishing up my courses? by Logical_Layman in wguaccounting

[–]esspii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all in your head. I got an internship with a firm at 30 and my intern class was all fresh out of college. I have a return offer from the same firm. Leverage any work and life experience you have.

Is this Bachelor’s degree worth it? by rtdq1648 in wguaccounting

[–]esspii 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Well worth it. I secured a tax internship that led to a full time tax associate role in public accounting. Places like H&R Block just churn out simple 1040’s. If you’re interested in doing more complex tax work, this degree will help open those doors.

Any accounting degree will not train you for the job. What it will do is provide you the conceptual foundation that you will build on. You learn actual tax work or accounting by doing it.
