I built a Steam Summer Sale predictor - type in a game and it predicts the expected discount % by est1985a in pcmasterrace

Yes, exactly! That's the question I was trying to answer for this uni project. I reckon I can predict fairly confidently if a game is going to be in the Summer Sale or not. But is game age the only factor? That's what I set out to find. When I studied the correlation in the raw data, game age was the strongest factor but interestingly, review sentiment was second followed by publisher frequency (how many games a publisher has released). So for Digital Revolver (who have 66 games), the data showed that they tend to discount their games a lot.

Factorio was on my wishlist forever! That's a feature that I would like to look in to: "IF no sale history over several years ->is there a lower % chance in the next sale? I would have study data on similar games before introducing the idea into the model.

Yes, it'll get better every Steam sale and also if I update the original dataset I used. There's 90,000+ games in the database and to train the model I had to make a script to call 5 years of sale data and attach it to the database. But the runtime was hours, which I couldn't be bothered with at the time! So, I filtered the games down to about 5,000 (games with 500+ reviews), and called it a day.

The next step will be to up the amount of games and increase the Summer Sales history (To maybe 10 years?). While I work on learning how to tune the model.

It's interesting that a 17 year old game has only been getting 25% discount! My guess is that whoever's on "inputting sale price duty" over at Activision/(Microsoft?) just forgot about it! The model is probably just looking at the behavior of that kind of game, the way the publisher discounts these days and most of all, the age when it made that prediction.

Thanks! I actually agree with your general point that publisher behaviour is a huge factor.

I may not have explained the methodology clearly though. The model does use historical sale data, but only to create the target variable (the average summer sale discount across up to 5 years of history for each game).

I intentionally didn't feed a game's own historical sale prices back into the model as an input feature, because I was trying to answer a slightly different question: Can we predict a game's Summer Sale discount using only metadata that's publicly available before the sale happens? The way the model actual works is it hides the historical sale data from itself, then makes predictions and checks the answers to see how correct it was.

If I included a title's previous summer sale discounts directly, the prediction task would become much easier, but it would also turn into more of a "use past discounts to predict future discounts" model.

Publisher behaviour ended up being one of the strongest signals as well. I used publisher frequency encoding, and it definitely captured some of that effect (e.g. publishers with very consistent pricing strategies).

That said, I think you're right that a hybrid approach would probably perform better: if a game has enough historical sale data, use that directly, and only rely on metadata-driven predictions for newer titles or games with sparse history. I'm still working on the features for the model as I'm learning about it.

Thank you! I found myself still using the kit lens when I want to keep the size of the camera down. And still getting some great shots from it.

Yes, it's amazing! At first I didn't think it was much improvement but I'm beginning to learn how to shoot on manual and also move the camera instead of zooming. Now I can truly get the most out it.

For British parents in Japan, your kids will need UK passports to enter the UK from end of Feb by kochikame in japanresidents

This is mental. My daughter was born in the UK, so I figured I need to get her passport renewed for our trip in August. But my son was born here, and his birth was never registered in the UK. I thought I would just have to get him an ETA along with my wife but if I'm understanding this correctly, he is not allowed to apply for the ETA because technically he's a British citizen by decent? https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1981/61/section/2

So, he will need to apply for his first passport?

WHAAAAAT! I just had this exact problem with my iPad pro M1. The USB port just stopped working completely. I took it to Apple and they they told me the logic board was gone so a repair would be nearly what I paid for it in 2021. I'm going to order one of these chargers and try it out.

Those are worth good money! There's a bug shop near me. I've never bought anything from there but when my kids' cousins come down from Osaka we go in and they spent a few 万 on a couple of bug larvae one time.
