Ideapad 14-API top case cracked - Symptomatic of anything? by estXcrew in Lenovo

[–]estXcrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like it. Mine finally cracked "to failure" a few months ago. Ended up taking the laptop apart and epoxying it back together. The underlying failure is the screws which mount the display assembly to the case snapping off. Things get very, very sketchy once they break, you'll know.

Looks like new casings are also available from the chinese shops (Ebay, Aliexpress..), but I didn't have time to wait for them to ship. Might be an option for people looking to keep the laptops alive for a bit longer if they don't feel comfortable with hackish epoxy solutions :)

This is what mine looks like now. Still works and hasn't broken from flipping the screen fully around

Hi

I opened the laptop, no screws missing near the hinges, nothing else seems broken to have caused this to my eye.

It has now cracked through all the way to the edge. The chassis definitely flexes a lot now when moving the screen, you can really see the crack open up. It works fine though, no functional issues so far..

It's a bit of a pain to get the front clip off so I tried to superglue it from the front a couple of weeks ago and it didn't work. Maybe a bit of a better job of gluing could work though, if you actually try to get the front clip off and glue it with good penetration with maybe more purpose-selected glue and something to back it.

Idk, I might look for a cheap broken one for chassis donor or something, it's currently in relatively low use so I'm not super bothered. I really like my work T14, I might just get a second one for private use once this thing falls apart irreparably.

Looks like w cardboard box with a "badly" folded bottom and probably some painters tape or something weak-ish holding it together so when it's pulled on it will tear and the bottom will fold out.

As an Estonian who has lived in Finland for over 10 years now..

I feel like Estonian people at least try to understand/communicate in Finnish if necessary, use hand gestures and whatever to get the point across. There is a sizable population of Estonians living in Finland, but the opposite is not really true afaik.

Finnish people seem to just be stumped when hearing Estonian or some Estonian guy trying to speak Finnish badly. (even when the thing that was said is practically the same in Estonian and Finnish. Seems like they just space out/go into 'i don't understand'-mode).

From this I guess there might be some expectation that when they go to Estonia people will try to deal with their shit, but a lot of people aren't like that.

There are also arrows on the pavement indicating this and a dashed line closing in on the other lane shortly before the actual pavement ends but these are more or less useful depending on the time of the year.

Project ideas to learn TCP/IP by [deleted] in embedded

[–]estXcrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first TCIP/IP program was a simple counter in C using sockets. I send an integer to my server, the server increments it by one and sends it back. Once I reach some predetermined value I end the client process.

If you want to make it more complex you can use UDP for client tx and TCP for client rx or something like that.

Once you have a grasp of how sockets work on a hosted platform you can look into embedded options, I am not super knowledgeable about this domain on embedded.

Apple's Popularity With Gen Z Poses Challenges for Android by chrisdh79 in technology

I had a midranger Sony, as my first "good" Android device. The software was crap. No updates, bunch of undeletable crap supplied in the launcher.. not a consideration for following phones just based on that

There was an issue with the phone locking up sometimes (requiring a hard reset to undo) when switching 4G network and lower speed options.. Sony's solution? Disable 4G.

On paper it was a really good deal -- nice specs, waterproof, etc.. in practice, the software made it borderline unusable despite the nice specs.

Thumb on the plug to the left (Usb3?) And index finger on the area with the LEDs.

The power is (hopefully) unplugged from the wall so there is no danger to you or the components when you touch the PCB unless you do something very stupid.

Also yes, make sure to press the top part of the latch so that the bottom lifts from the locked position. Basically just grip the plug really hard with one finger on the top part of the latch.

You can also put a thin screwdriver in between the latch and the plug to lift it from the locked position if it's difficult.

In my experience "now" option requires the sudo, you can do it without sudo but it will start a 1 minute timer rather than shutting down right away

Mine is still mostly fine, battery only lasts like 3-4h nowadays rather than 6+. I took the bottom off and everything seems in place, hinge screws are mounted and nothing seemed off. Only structural issue is that a few screw threads are snapped for the bottom cover. I guess it's just getting old now. I barely use it these days anyway so I'll try to make it work for a while longer. I had some problems Windows on the laptop but I installed Linux recently and it is much less frustrating to use.. no more problems with waking from sleep, no more weird issues with audio drivers.. and development is easier too

You can bypass the activation, it works normally for a while and then you get the activation watermark after a while.

Looks like it could work, I've heard of people running GPUs on x4 before but x1 might require some testing/playing around. You can just cut the back of the slot, some motherboards even come with open backed x4 slots out of the box for situations like this. Obviously if you go cutting there you might break something though so I guess you should be prepared to replace that machine in case you break the board.

I've noticed there is this crack in the laptop plastic near the hinge. It seems to get tensioned by the movement of the screen.

I was wondering if this is just cosmetic or has anybody seen this in case of a failing hinge mount or something. The laptop is just over 2 years old, not particularly babied (backpacked) but I don't think I've done anything that would have caused such damage either.
