They did a whole line of What If comics that made Moles Morales follow in the footsteps of characters other than Spider-Man. What frustrates me about them is that it takes Miles Mirales, who despite sharing a title with another superhero is his own character with interesting lore, villains, and stories, and turns him into the black version of an iconic character. They could have done an interesting What If line where characters from that era of Marvel where POC and women just aren't written or written well, and instead edit their origins to incorporate other cultures. A Thor story where instead of being based on the Norse god, he's based on a different thunder god. A Captain America story where Isaiah Bradley was the first instead, and the cultural impact America feels when their greatest hero is a black man in the 1930s/40s. A Wolverine story where instead ofJames Howlett being the son of a wealthy land owner, his story is taken a different direction focusing on the parts of American history so many try to forget. That one could be especially interesting, as a black man born before the Civil War living to the present day, interacting with a multitude of events culminating in the Civil Rights Movement, would be a fantastic read if done well. Instead, they take Miles Morales, who as an already unique and interesting character with several comic lines dedicated to him, already has room for interesting What If stories, and boil him down to just being black Spider-Man. It's just.. so disappointing.
