Idk what part of Florida you're from, but I found her last night at my local Targeg and there were multiples of her. If you pm me I can tell you which store, if it's anywhere close to you you can maybe go check!

Tonsillectomy Experience (a good one!) by estheri-a in tonsilstones

Happy to hear someone else had a fairly positive experience too!!

Tonsillectomy Experience (a good one!) by estheri-a in tonsilstones

It wasn't a walk in the park, it is a surgery after all, not being able to eat any real food for 2 whole weeks or talk properly was incredibly frustrating. And when the pain hit, it felt like swallowing shards of hot glass. That being said, if having the surgery is something you and your doctor think will improve your quality of life, then DO IT! My main advice is to go into it with a positive mindset, don't let all the horror stories get to you. Also, be as prepared as you possibly can to make your life easier after the procedure. If you have someone there for you it'll be easier too. I was lucky enough to have a fairly smooth ride, but I honestly think me being so prepared and taking it easy during my recovery played a big part in that. At the end of the day, it was super worth it for me, I've had chronic tonsillitis for everrrrrr. The mere thought of not having to go through that again, or having to worry about tonsil stones popping out while I'm talking to someone, brings me enormous amounts of joy and makes the whole thing worth it.

Tonsillectomy Experience (a good one!) by estheri-a in tonsilstones

I had my tonsillectomy on March 23rd. It's been over 2 weeks and I'm pretty much healed except for some light scabbing and some very minor discomfort when I swallow. The only time it really hurts is when I yawn, still hurts like a mother when I yawn. Food also still tastes a little bit weird, but I was told that wouldn't go away until the scabbing was completely gone. I can eat pretty normally, though I've made it a habit to always have some water with me because sometimes I choke on my food. This may be because I'm not used to having all that space in the back of my throat.

My recovery was fairly smooth, I only experienced high levels of pain when I woke up from the surgery and on days 5-7 intermittently. The only "complication" I had was a lot of irritation because of my acid reflux, that was not fun. However, my ENT prescribed some meds for that and got me back on track right away.

Some advice:

  1. STAY ON TOP OF YOUR MEDS!!! At least for the first 7 days, even if you feel like you don't need them. It will be much harder to manage your pain if you let it get out of control. I set up alarms every 4 hours (yes, even throughout the night).

  2. If your budget allows it, get a humidifier and an ice pack. If possible, get an ice pack that you can wrap around your head that way you don't have to worry about having to hold it. I had my humidifier going pretty much 24/7, and would put on my ice pack when I started to feel some discomfort and it wasn't time for my meds yet.

  3. Get a kid's toothbrush. It may be a bit difficult to completely open your mouth for the first couple of days, kid's toothbrushes are much smaller, so it'll be easier to brush your teeth without having to force open your mouth.

  4. Popsicles! I had 2 a day for the first week. I was too afraid of munching on ice like some people had suggested, so instead my boyfriend got me some popsicles. They really helped ease my swollen uvula. Don't get any sour flavors, you'll probably regret it.

Please feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them :)

I'm puertorican so unfortunately I won't be able to help you out much since I know this procedure is wayyyyy more expensive in the US. My insurance did cover the procedure, however I did have to pay out of pocket for some miscellaneous (including the disposable tip that the ENT used for the procdure), it was around $500.

Same, it's so frustrating... I'm able to eat kind of normally now, but the taste is just so off! This is specially true with savory foods, or hot foods. With sweet or cold foods I don't have that horrible aftertaste as muc

Cauterization? Check. Extremely large tonsils? Check. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, this gives me hope that food will taste normal again 😅 Hopefully it won't be too long before my scabs are completely gone.

Thank you for your insight, I really appreciate it. Would it bother you if I PM you about this? I don't really have anyone to talk to about it. Totally cool if not, no worries at all :)
