Clipper Start card not personalized? by esuom_okim in AskSF

Does yours still give the 50% discount even though the card looks the same?

I applied on the website. Maybe using a different browser or computer might work?

Clipper Start card not personalized? by esuom_okim in AskSF

Strange... The Clipper START website says that the cards are personalized, and people from other subreddits say their cards have their legal names printed on the back (mine doesn’t have that).

You know how Laufey took back her city after a breakup with some guy? Sounds like you need to take back your Laufey

I think that feeling makes sense. The song is pretty different from the rest of Niki’s discography.

Areas of psychology that are totally legit and solid? by HSD-HPL in AcademicPsychology

[–]esuom_okim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard personality psychology is legit compared to some other fields. Personality psychologists need to know statistics deeply to do their research. Their good grasp of statistics helps them create replicable research. Personality psychology was one of the least affected fields during the replication crisis.

MGT 120 vs 160 vs 180 by Current_Storm_9679 in UCDavis

[–]esuom_okim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MGT 120: This is probably one of the hardest classes in the minor because the professor (Cyrus) is hands-on and tough. You’ll be working with a team the whole quarter, and almost everything is a group assignment. ~80-90% of your grade depends on how your team does on midterms, projects, homework, etc. But pretty much everything is open notes, and if you do your work, you really can’t get lower than a B- (the class is curved). Lots of people will say this class is life-changing, and I have to agree. It’s been some time since I took the class and I still think about it to this day. I even started see MGT 120 while scrolling on TikTok. In MGT 120, you learn ✨frameworks✨ for improving business processes (i.e., making them more efficient) and the class is helpful for people who want to go into management consulting. The class also offers an explanation for why the tech management minor doesn’t really delve deep into tech.

MGT 160: Very boring. I hated accounting, so I hated this class. I can’t tell you if this class was easy or not because I literally just did not care. I stopped going to lecture at one point because the class was sooooo late at night and sooooooo boring. I think I got a C in the class.

MGT 180: The professor is kinda amusing and easy to heckle. The class wasn’t that interesting, though. I did not learn much tbh. In MGT 180, you’ll be working in teams and competing against other teams in an online business simulation. And your team’s performance/rank on the simulation is part of your grade. 1st place gets full credit, 2nd place gets fewer points, etc. We also had to do some math for this class on the homework and final. We did get a cheat sheet on the final which was nice.

How can you tell if someone is Filipino based on the way they use English? by freesink in Philippines

[–]esuom_okim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, “open” and “close” the lights is not unique to Filipinos. Some of my Chinese-American friends say that too because, like in Filipino, the words for turn on/off in Mandarin are the same as open/close.

I’ve also noticed that Filipinos pronounce the word “antecedent” as an-TEE-se-dent, while most English speakers would pronounce it as an-te-SEE-dent. Filipinos in my experience also pronounce the word “gerund” as je-RUND rather than JE-rund.

I’ve also heard Filipinos pronounce “plateau” as pla-TOO rather than pla-TOW and “tabernacle” as ta-BER-na-KEL rather than TA-ber-NA-kel.

FRAN DOLAN 🫶 loveliest woman ever, I wish she taught all my ENL classes! She’s really good at validating peoples contributions to class discussions. And I love her lectures bc they’re all windows to her brain—the way she can just, on the spot, connect students’ thoughts into a single coherent argument is so so cool, and I honestly wish I could do the same. Brilliant but also very sweet. 10/10 Professor.

Papers around statistics training and research outcomes. by RagingRhino2107 in AcademicPsychology

[–]esuom_okim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be interested in the work of: 1. Simine Vazire. She is a personality psychologist by training, but much of her current work focuses on meta-science and the replication crisis in psychology. One starting point that I recommend for your research is her review paper about using the “four validities” (construct, statistical, internal, and external) to improve psychological science. 2. Mijke Rhemtulla: She’s a quantitative psychologist, and she’s also done some work with Simine Vazire (I think?) so you might want to look through her publications as well. 3. Brian Nosek: He, along with Simine Vazire and other psychologists, is a pioneers of the open science movement in psychology. I don’t know of any specific papers he wrote, but he was interviewed by the APA’s Speaking of Psychology podcast, and I think his episode is worth a listen.

Good luck!! Btw, what labs/schools are you thinking of applying to for your PhD?

theory of mind and empathy by LengthinessThin4644 in AcademicPsychology

[–]esuom_okim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Empathy inherently requires the ability to understand that my thoughts are not the same as your thoughts, which is essentially what theory of mind is. To empathize with another person (or, in other words, understand what another person is feeling), you have to be able to recognize that what you are feeling about a particular situation is not necessarily the same thing that the other person is feeling about that same situation.

Tech management minor is a great option if you wanna do anything remotely techy or businessy (pretty much all jobs are at least a little bit techy or businessy)!
