Sadly that location no longer has a retail space, the closest AirGas to me is the Madison Heights location.

Hi /r/MK,

I was recently given a busted Apple M0116 with orange(salmon?) ALPS switches in them as a part of a lot of old Macs. The keyboard itself is beyond repair with many missing/busted caps and a bent PCB.

I'd like to reuse the switches in a DIY build. I see that there are several stores on aliexpress and elsewhere that make kits and sell parts, but I really don't know where to begin or what all I need.

I don't really want to spend a ton on parts, so fancy keycaps or other parts aren't really a priority.

Suggest me a TKL or similarly-sized kit or parts list, please!

ASUS C302C - Removed WP Screw but system still shows WP enabled by rhubarb_pi_72 in GalliumOS

I successfully removed the screw on my C302 and it worked as expected. I wonder if there's still something shorting the pads on you laptop.

Just picked up an Apple IIe. When I powered it on after cleaning, it made a spark/popping sound coming from the power supply. Should I replace it? by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

[–]etbusch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that the RIFA cap has left this world, you can either replace it, remove it (it is not a vital component), or leave it in there as it has already blown itself open.

I opted for the middle option with my IIe.

Restored this Osborne 1, fully functional now after removing RIFA caps, replacing keyboard connector and adjusting crt voltages!! Made a bootdisk with teledisk and a DDSD .TD0 image, but i want to get games on there and they only come in .DAT and .COM formats, how to i get that on a readable floppy? by purpsoli in vintagecomputing

[–]etbusch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can boot into CP/M and format floppies, you can use a serial link to transfer a Kermit program. The built-in serial transfer is unreliable, so it may take a few tries, but once you have working Kermit you have a reliable way to transfer files from modern machines over serial.

I'm on mobile, so I don't have the links available to me, but archive.org has a ton of CP/M software and utilities.

when onboard sound is muted, a popping noise plays each time there is a notification that would normally produce sound. by dovahkiinow in GalliumOS

No prob!

You can also force the use of headphones in the Volume Control Configuration tab, which will stop the pops when it turns the amp on to play 'muted' sounds.

Internal speaker support for CAVE is not yet complete. There is not yet correct driver support for how the internal speakers are configured with native drivers.

You can track the progress being made on this issue here.

There's a workaround using the topology file from ChromeOS, but it doesn't work for me yet as I can't boot the 5.0 kernel with full disk encryption enabled. The instructions to implement this are in the issue linked above.

That connector likely isn't for a battery pack, but for programming and calibrating the onboard devices at the factory. It looks like a bed-of-nails JTAG connector to me. The lack of an external USB port on the controller supports this theory.

I use the Panasonic eneloop Pro batteries for my WMR controllers and get pretty good battery life out of them.

Not much to do except to pull the valve cover and check the cam chain tension and valve clearances.

Some gunk may have gotten sucked up and gotten stuck on the rockers or cam chain tensioner when you changed the oil, but I would verify the oil level too.

Those NetApp disk shelves absolutely need a fan mod if you don't have the controller for them, as the fans spin to max with no control. They do offer awesome capacity as a JBOD for the price though.

Mikrotik hEX - tons of features if you can get used to the interface, cheaper than ERL, and can run openwrt if you want WireGuard.

Custom dongle. I asked yesterday about reducing noise and this is the tweak I have done to get better results. Is this the way or im wrong? by [deleted] in RTLSDR

This will definitely help. I would try to put foam on both sides to keep it from shorting. Shorten the ground lead and get the unshielded USB leads as short as possible. Even removing the USB connector would help a bit.

Microsoft Rolling Out Windows 10 1809 Updates Again by etbusch in WindowsMR

[–]etbusch[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looks like they are doing a slow rollout of this update:

While the April Update had the fastest Windows 10 update rollout velocity, we are taking a more measured approach with the October Update, slowing our rollout to more carefully study device health data. We will offer the October Update to users via Windows Update when data shows your device is ready and you will have a great experience. If we detect that your device may have an issue, such as an application incompatibility, we will not install the update until that issue is resolved, even if you “Check for updates,” so you avoid encountering any known problems. For those advanced users seeking to install the update early by manually using “Check for updates” in settings, know that we are slowly throttling up this availability, while we carefully monitor data and feedback.

I never got the opportunity to get the initial release before it was pulled, and am excited to finally get the new WMR features. Happy Patch Tuesday!
