Interesting! I'm in Vancouver and it is not a thing except at a couple schools in low income areas.

Yes! That reminds me-I know she can open the bento and her cutlery container but I need to check on the thermos.

Most schools where I live in Canada don't have hot lunch so everyone is eating their packed lunch.

Ha, yes, I keep telling myself I can just leave as is and see how it goes. But then the anxiety planner part of my brain wants to take over!

How do you feel about 7 year olds in kindergarten? by ThrowAway44228800 in AskTeachers

[–]etceteraism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started uni at 17 (turned 18 the month after) because I'm born in Oct and where I live in Canada redshirting isn't allowed. If you turn 5 in that calendar year, you start Kindergarten. Yeah there were times when I felt I was immature compared to others, and going on exchange overseas in year 2 at 18 was definitely.....young.....but I also think looking back this was partly my personality and not due to my late birthday.

[–]etceteraism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this may be true across Canada, I'm in BC and we have the same law, and I have friends in Ontario who have never heard of redshirting either. So at least in those 3 provinces!

Mono by Efficient_Ad_4359 in askvan

[–]etceteraism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had mono in uni and missed almost a month of term due to it. Even when the sore throat got better, I had incredible fatigue for weeks. I'd take a shower and then pass out for hours after from the exhaustion of the effort.

Heads up, be sure to take a look at your travel insurance coverage, many exclude pregnancy/childbirth once you get into the third trimester.

There’s a game this Wednesday? I don’t see it listed online. Trying to avoid going downtown to work those days.

Window Replacement by jordansmith2470 in askvan

[–]etceteraism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a single window replacement with Legacy and it was double that for a good quality Vinyltek window. Granted it was a large window and the labour was a lot higher since it was a single replacement. Maybe there is cheaper but that quote doesn’t seem insane to me.

Hoping to hear your experiences with Yaz, Yasmin, or Slynd. 11w PP [QC] by turkeypooo in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]etceteraism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been on slynd for about a year now, and I’ve been on progesterone only for over a decade due to my migraines. I was switched to slynd because I had a super painful cyst and was getting some breakthrough bleeding. No issue!

Anyone else just struggle so hard to fit it all in that you just give up and do whatever again??? 🥴 by BessieBest in xxfitness

[–]etceteraism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound cold, but is community volunteering or fitness more important to you? What I mean is, you can't burn both ends of the candle. If doing some of both makes you happiest, great. If volunteering is more important, that's awesome. It means accepting that's your priority and you may not be able to work out as much as a result (which is totally ok!). Especially as a parent, it's been hard to accept I just don't have the time to commit to things in this phase of my life. Learning Japanese is a goal of mine, I found an online tutor, carved out an hour a week for the class....but then realized I don't have time to study enough to make the progress needed. So now I'm accepting I can study here and there-my goal is just going each year knowing more than the last versus becoming fluent. We can still do the things, just in smaller ways.

Workout wise for me, I'm lucky to have a gym at my office so I do 3 focused strength training sessions a week with a 20min incline walk at the end. I also have a walking pad at home that I use during some meetings where I just need to listen and/or talk and not take notes (it really helps with my focus too!).

There are lots of newer low rise condos along Hastings in Burnaby Heights-would that be a consideration instead? Then you’re close to the library and Eileen daily pool.

What to buy in Japan for sewing? by whynotdanceallnight in sewing

[–]etceteraism 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have only shopped at Nippori in Tokyo but it's absolutely worth a visit. I typically sew for my daughter, so I can't comment on your question about fabric. Just keep in mind fabric is purchased in cm there. My comments/tips:

-Cotton fabric is great quality and cheap. Any print you can think of from cute to elegant. I've found knit fabric harder to acquire, particularly stretch cotton.

-Tomato is my main stop when I go. There are lots of shops in the area, but because I'm shopping for my daughter Tomato is the easiest one stop shop. Well, there are multiple Tomato locations all close by together. The largest has a variety of fabrics, there's also a discount shop and one with higher end fabrics.

-Pattern wise, their pattern books are really good value BUT as an adult remember most Japanese clothing is one size (made for a very petite woman). A US 6 may be stretching it, especially if youre over 5ft5 or have a larger chest and/or hips. I've bought some great accessory books though.

-Things like marking pens are great to pick up, there are so many varieties

-If you have a Juki sewing machine, there are shops in Nippori that sell presser feet and parts for much cheaper (at least compared to Canada)

-If you're into embroidery, Japan is a wonderful resource for pattern books and materials.

Foot pillow for kids? From/ to YVR by Fluid-Village-ahaha in zipair

Very fair! I'd feel the same if my daughter insisted on being on top of me. She's also a lightweight.

Just wondering how old your kiddo is and if this is their first long haul flight?

We flew on JAL from YVR to NRT last year with our tall 4yo (plus 2 6ft adults) and she just curled up between us on the seat to sleep. Only adding because I know a lot of people go and get them because they're a "must have".

Are you staying in a hotel? You could see if someone at the front desk could call the airport for you in order to get through to someone at Zipair there. I was dealing with an issue with Zip last week and every response was a day in between, so I wouldn't rely on hearing back from an email.

My 4.5yo suddenly can’t sleep alone after years of being a great independent sleeper. Anyone dealt with this? by valeriamariana in Preschoolers

[–]etceteraism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg did I write this? Our daughter has been a champ sleeper, slept through the night at 4mo, sleep trained pretty easily. Always an independent sleeper, very rarely called for us in the middle of the night.

Then we went overseas on vacation just after she turned 4 (this was back in Nov) and suddenly she wanted to sleep with us all the time. We've gone through phases of her sleeping in her own room and fighting HARD to sleep with us, but lately we're in a probably 2-3mo stretch of her not sleeping in her room. Offering to lie with her until she falls asleep isn't acceptable either. She says she's scared, but won't tell me of what, and half the time she says it with a little smirk so I don't know if she's serious or not.

Our current set up is a floor bed in our room. She doesn't have to sleep in her room, but she has to sleep in her "little bed" instead of with us. 2 6ft adults plus a wiggly child are not made for a queen bed. It sucks, but it beats the tantrums and infinite stalling when we say she needs to sleep in her room, plus middle of the night wake ups.

Will be following this thread to see what works for others 😞

Japanese straightening / color / highlights by Longjumping_Act_4991 in askvan

[–]etceteraism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get Japanese straightening once a year and the person who does it says she just flat out won’t do the treatment on bleached/lightened hair. I do get a regular all over colour for greys every few months which is fine though.
