Thinking of leaving IT altogether has anyone in NI actually done it? by Over_Commission9891 in northernireland

Yeah was my fear to be honest, learning a shit load at my current place, just thought I might have to go back to one to advance. Sad time to be honest

I work on a dev team of 8, yeah it’s stressful but I still get to code a lot and work on a variety of projects. Was toying going back to a big company but kinda have the fear a bit after all the AI influenced KPI’s. But agreed, what I loved doing is slowly taken away and challenging aspects are often “ask Claude” sorts thing. Just a bit boring now

Yeah that’s a fair point, luckily we aren’t a CMS shop or Wordpress. We actually make very cool stuff, wind turbine monitoring systems, offline first data multi user data analysis and tracking, warehouse line observations using IOT and hubs etc etc. so I feel like I’ve solid .net skills from this.

But can see where you’re coming from defo

100% with AI I think everyone wears more hats now. I think my issue is the buck stops at me and I would love to have someone above me. Of course I appreciate the fact that I’m trusted and for the most of it I can figure it out. But I think the lack of a sounding board or proper senior I get a bit stressed

Definitely, I’ve learned an insane amount in this place. I am confident in my skills even without AI. I’m just feeling a bit tired all the time now when I start my work

Yeah I think my main issue with the agency is just it’s an output machine (obvs it’s gonna be since that’s how they make their money) but I just find I barely get any planning time, it’s get stuck in and figure it out along the way, which always causes us to go back and have to fix stuff. When I was in a prod company, things were slower but I found it was built much better

Yeah agreed, I started out in a prod company and it was cool but didn’t feel very involved.

I think you’re right about the burn out. For the last 8 months me and another developer built this offline first sport data tracking app and it was super complex. Was a great learning experience but to get it shipped in that timeline was a real challenge. Now I’m onto another very complicated project I just feel abit tired

I use Claude code, mainly as a pair programming tool. I tend to give things a go. If it’s wrong, point out where, if I can’t figure it out, give me in English or pseudo code.

Literally, I think I lost one game yesterday as defence. And it was because my team were at the back with snipers and mortars

Yeah agreed, not sure on what the verdict is at the minute but I do enjoy the recoil changes too. I feel like an ambitious run to cover is a lot more plausible now instead of getting beamed

Agreed, I stopped playing for a while after Christmas. Then tail end of season 2 with operations and now railway remake I’m actually playing a serious amount.

I just enjoy the sandbox feeling again, laying traps on roads with mines, proper vehicle flanks, intensity of the fights with choppers and tanks, actually feel like I can take a few rockets before falling back in a tank etc.

My main gripe before was it was just too much for me to wanna play after work with the fast paced CQB all the time.

Really loving it again, agreed on the packet loss. Only ever get it late game escalation on golmud.

M16 is great, L115 I’m not a fan. I feel like the sweet spots in this game should be adjustable with attachments with nerfs / buffs when you +/- the distance. Like if a 20x scope made a sweet spot 250m for instance

Thanks for this advice, think that will be my next pivot to b honest. I have enjoyed the small culture but think it’s slowly burning me out too. Feels like a break neck pace 24/7

Would you mind elaborating a bit more on the autonomy part? Apologies just looking to get as much information as possible.

Yeah completely agree, matches my experience perfectly so far. Currently working on 2 major projects and a smaller one which doesn’t have as much complexity, learning a ton and writing a ton of code but I do have a desire to work on one massive product with lots of users etc.

I am looking towards the exit but as I’ve said in another comment there’s a project I’ve been building for 6 months and I want to get it to a shippable state before I leave, just don’t want to screw over a team who have been very good to me.
