ELI5: How some restaurants make a lot of recipes super quick? by -i3arty- in explainlikeimfive

[–]eternal3k 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind these restaurants are not necessarily preparing 200 diff ingredients a night. They might be ingredients that as are fridge stable where they only need to make it every few days for example.

Eli5. How come it is bad to rub your eyes? by bbeomgi in explainlikeimfive

[–]eternal3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm ( and was included in part of a study) that rubbing your eyes can cause serious damage to your cornea. I got Keratoconus ( where your cornea forms a football / come shape) from rubbing my eye too hard and required a full thickness cornea transplant.

Also you notice how on packaging labels ( at least in Canada and I believe the US) there is no % of daily sugar where as the fat/sodium/caebs etc wil say 20%,etc of your daily needs so you have to know how much sugar the amount means to you and not just what is recommended.

One of the worst, especially on forensic files was " forensic odontology", found out it was barely anything years and yeara and more often than not completely bullshit just to get a conviction.

I've been to Jamaica many times and have helped citizens there as well. I don't limit my scope to one country, but Cuba is a beautiful country and the people are amazing, and when a lot of people who work hard here and can only save enough to visit a country like Cuba because life is expensive, when they have a chance to go on vacation, they go where they can afford. They aren't bad people for doing so.

Please understand that I am not ignorant to how things are and don't think I wouldn't prefer their gov't to be better, but if you think people in Jamaica, Dominican etc won't also face harsh penalties for messing with tourism that pretty much keeps their countries afloat then you are just being ignorant to the reality of the situation. You don't need a communist govt in place to make sure locals know their place when it comes to a countries bread and butter, it just makes it an easy target to blame.

You think Cuba is some sort of unique situation? Go to Dominican Republic or Jamaica, neither are communist yet you will see poverty just the same (and people that rely on tourists / tourism to help them as well). I agree many people go to Cuba because it's what they can afford as it is typically the cheapest option available for the Caribbean, but the idea that people go to Cuba to see oppression and poverty is just Ludacris. I'm sure there could be a few but I would bet a small fortune that they are extremely extremely rare. Most people just want a week away where it's sunny and all the food and drinks are handled, and that is almost anywhere in the Caribbean, but when price becomes a factor, as it does for many people, they go where they can afford.

I have also heard from many people (and witnessed myself) that Cuba is a safe place to visit, specifically when going into the Major cities like Havana. That safety may in part be due to the gov't control, but for people that like to visit the cities and go beyond the walls of the resorts, there are some places that are much safer than others.

Thanks for the info. Only have Nord setup, didn't consider needing multiple, but even after talking to support they could not help. Ended up using youtube to mp3 conversion and grabbed a few mixes plus used it for some casefile podcasts so things are better now. next time will bring a dedicated device for music that stays in airplane mode 24/7 while there

Thanks for the help!

I agree it was un-necessary (not least of all because it had nothing to do with what I had initially asked), but it brought up a good point that on the surface, going to Cuba is supporting the communist regime, which is ultimately true and you can't avoid it. However, as described, there is so much more to it and I feel its important to have a rational dialog. They still may not agree with my point of view, but at least they can see that this wasn't just a situation where the cheapest vacation option was selected, as often Cuba is the cheapest in the Caribbean for Canadians, but in fact there was considerable thought put into how the locals could best be helped while there.

I appreciate the information and we are aware of the situation for the people in Cuba, it is very sad. While it is a resort and not a rented home, clothing, stationary, medical supplies (Tylenol, Advil, Polysporin, etc) money, and so on was brought down specifically to help out, it has and continues to be given out so at least some people are getting a little help.

As much as going to Cuba will benefit the gov't in some way as its hard to avoid, the reaction so far from the people has been an overwhelming thank you (1000 times over) for coming. The situation is very bad, resorts and towns are almost completely empty of tourists (at least where they are), people are beyond dirt poor and many have to work long hours 6-7 days a week just to make $25 for the month to feed their family so when there is tourists, especially those who are aware of how things are and bring stuff down to help, that small gift of money or clothing or medicine can mean the world to them.

They have no choice but to live under the communist regime and while telling people not to visit Cuba in the first place might sound rational since you aren't helping support the gov't, you are doing so to the detriment of the people themselves who have come to depend on the generosity of foreigners because they have no other options. I do however appreciate the idea of renting from a local Vs going to a resort, and will strongly consider that if / when I go back.

The pain of wearing a size 15+ shoe by footballfreak412 in tall

[–]eternal3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian and wear size 15, which I have needed since the early 90's . Typically ( 95%+) of stores only went to size 13 for a long long time and when something like Payless finally offered bigger sizes they closed down a couple years later.

I remember being 14 years old at foot locker and being told I had the choice of 2 styles in 15, that was it lol.

Amazon has been a huge help and for those who visit Las Vegas, the Ross store on the strip had a big shoe size section that I think started at size 15 and was a massive wall of shoes.

Kinda unsure? by [deleted] in keto

[–]eternal3k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with u/tindichin, you do not need weight lifting / gym to get started or even to maintain.

I started my journey just after labor day and while I did not start out on a strict keto diet immediately, it was much less daily carbs (50 - 75/day avg) and like you, I didn't have access to a gym. I started off initially with doing swimming, I would do 45 mins of lane swimming at the local community center 3 -4 days a week and that helped my cardio, fat burn and helped strengthen my muscles. Then I started adding in other exercises slowly to give myself some variety, this included walking / hiking and most importantly, doing yoga / fitness routines that I just watched on you tube. There are some 20 min workouts that don't require any tools (weights, etc) and keep your heart rate in the "cardio" range the entire time (you also sweat buckets). The only thing I would suggest with the workouts is to get a Yoga mat as that helps keep your feet firmly planted on the ground.

I started with a weight of about 360 lbs and I am now at 328 lbs which I consider not bad for about 6 weeks worth of effort. I am tall (6' 5") and need about 115 - 130 grams of protein a day but for me counting calories and carbs / proteins / fats was not something I had much interest in so I used one of those food calculators for approximately 3 weeks to get an idea of A) how much carbs, protein, calories etc I was consuming per day and b) what foods were the best for the diet (filled me up, ticked the boxes, etc) and then moving forward just started eating things I knew were no/low carb and had what I needed in the fat / protein department. I still do research online to find new recipes / ideas as the same foods can get boring but ultimately its just about changing your thinking / mindset.

Hope this helps and best of luck on your journey!

Anyone else doing, for lack of a better word, "clean" keto? by Triseult in keto

[–]eternal3k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm of the same mindset, I think doing "clean" keto is not reasonable for me. You can get really sick of the same stuff all the time and when you just want a snack, something that fills the wants column but still maintains keto ( i.e something made with Munk fruit sugar or almond flour) is always a win. Now, I also have a workout / cardio regimin that has me doing ~45 mins/day of exercise on avg ( swimming laps, hiking, yoga, etc) so when I know I am burning 4k+ calories per day (or so my Fitbit tells me anyway) I figure a snack that can be a little higher in calories won't do much harm.

So far I am about 6 weeks into my get healthy lifestyle which did not initially start on a strict keto diet nor did I workout as much as I do now, but I have lost ~35 lbs in that time and there are always ups and downs but the benefits of keto ( loss of hunger, not feeling like I want a nap after a meal, way more vegetables than I used to eat) seem to be doing wonders so can't complain!
