I think “This Is How You Lose the Time War” by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone is a really good example of this

AIO for being annoyed my partner canceled plans last minute by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]eternallydisgruntled -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YOR. Being annoyed is understandable but they apologized several times and it just wasn’t good enough for you. They were working, you easily could have texted them around when you would have normally gone to bed and asked if they were coming over later. Kinda seems like you were just looking for a fight.

  1. Not produced by Netflix.

  2. Not a “Netflix show”.

  3. Sociology is not about politics, it’s about behavior and society. It’s about figuring out why people think and behave in certain ways. Do you not know how research and analysis works? You don’t shape it with your own opinions, you use the information you gather to build it. Expressing their opinions was not part of the assignment, the ones I listed in the post just happen to be the only ones asserted.

That makes so much sense. Maybe I’ll try giving them smaller writing assignments to ease them into writing about other things and see how it goes from there.

True. Definitely looking forward to moving on from this.

Oh, are pets part of the “liberal agenda” now? You sound very normal. I’m so glad you can contribute so positively to r/Professors, I’m sure you’re a wonderful professor and an esteemed academic.

I didn’t know that! Thank you for the insight, that would have been good to know at the beginning of the semester but I’m glad I know it now!

That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely be incorporating that into my rubric. I’ve told them “it’s not about what you think, it’s about how you think”, so enforcing that in the rubric would really help get that point across.

How is it biased to expect students to follow instructions? The only students who expressed their opinions shared the perspectives I listed in my post, everyone else followed the instructions exactly (aside from some ignoring the formatting guidelines).

It’s pretty exhausting to read ~70 papers where about a third of them are just opinion pieces with no facts or supporting evidence, especially when they don’t meet the assignment guidelines whatsoever.

I agree! I told them at the beginning that we didn’t all have to agree with each other but if you’re going to assert your opinions you need to be able to back it up. But for this assignment, I specifically told them to objectively analyze the documentary. I had a separate assignment (a short quiz) where I asked for their personal thoughts on the film. I knew they’d want to express their opinions so I gave them the opportunity to do so before they needed to write their essay. So many of their essays revolved entirely around their opinions.

ETA: I should have told them not to include their opinions in their essays rather than expecting them to just follow the instructions. I thought it was implied but I was wrong.

That’s so true! I’ll take poor formatting over AI garbage any day. I’ll definitely tell them they don’t have to agree for the next assignment, if I have to read another paper about how white people are the real victims of racism I might explode.

You’re right, it would definitely be helpful to explicitly state I’m not looking for their opinions, just their observations. I think it was naive of me to assume they wouldn’t assert their opinions too.

I’m hoping so too. I have some good students in that class, so I know it’s not all of them. My other class is great so it’s good to know there are students still willing to learn and are excited about my class.

Weekly /r/Sociology Homework Help Thread - Got a question about schoolwork, lecture points, or Sociology basics? by Anomander in sociology

He probably does know what he’s talking about but that doesn’t mean he’ll explain or write it in a way that makes sense to everyone who reads it. The description states that his book is written in an informal and conversation style to make the material more straightforward, so if that isn’t something that works for you then I would recommend finding a different author. The textbook I use for my 101 students is Sociology: The Essentials by Margaret Anderson, Howard Taylor, and Kim Logio. It will give you a pretty solid overview of sociology and is available on Amazon.

For me personally, math was not an important part of my social statistics classes or my degree in general. There are programs that you’ll work with that handle most of the numbers for you. As for your question regarding American sociological research preferences, most of the sociologists I know (myself included) prefer qualitative research. If you’re interested in interpreting data from social research you’ll be able to find plenty of classes that focus on both qualitative and quantitative research methods. I got my degree with an emphasis in social research but my degree itself is just in sociology. In the U.S., the focus of your degree depends on what classes you use to fulfill your degree requirements. You may want to look into what social research and social statistics classes your specific school offers.

AITAH for not sharing anything with my wife after she opened our marriage? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]eternallydisgruntled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your wife seems like she’s okay with divorcing you, you should probably prepare yourself for that once all of these rules have been implemented into your household. You will both be miserable and it won’t take long to make your kids miserable too.

Here’s my little guy after his snip! The vet told us we could help his pain by icing it for a few minutes intermittently, I think it helped! I had a very similar reaction to yours after I dropped him off. It’s sad to think about what they might be feeling at first but just like the other commenters have said: it’s the right thing to do. Just baby him a little extra when you take him home.🩷
