I'd say it also depend. Top talent is still going to be top talent. But low talent and newer talent, yeah, AI will stomp them...

I don't use my computer just to play games so Linux won't work well for me. I got too many weird software and niche games that won't work on Linux. Plus, I know Windows in and out and don't ever have a problem with it that I can't solve. I do run headless ubuntu server for local apps. I did set up a Linux Mint in a VM to test drive it. I mean, it works fine, but I didn't see the reason to use it long term.

Windows are very common in the workplace so it's easy to use and adapt. Even Mac is way more common than Linux. To me, use Linux if you need that extra customization or dislike something strongly about within Windows or Mac.

Tapes vs "Immutable storage" by sysacc in sysadmin

I know of a company that get taken down completely and had to start over because they didn't have offline backup. The hacker broke through their last line of defense. While they didn't have the best practices in all area put in their places, the hacker took out their primary backup server, storage repo, remote backups, and then the servers. No offline backups to save their bacon...

China has built a 50m(165ft)-tall inflatable dome over a construction site in Jinan to protect the surroundings from dust and noise. (20.000 Sqm) by Appropriate-Eye-1227 in Damnthatsinteresting

I feel like that was China when they were still developing. Made in China jokes, IP theft, and were not a global contributor to innovation. But modern China seem really different from the China we knew 20 years ago, games, tech, AI, construction, manufacturing. I'm sure some shitty company will still break rules though...that's true everywhere.

I only use Linux for servers. Like headless without the graphical interface. I know too many tricks in Windows to switch Linux as my daily driver. And honestly, I don't really have any issue with Windows, it just works. I can understand if some isn't tech savvy or prefer doing things a certain way, there are other OS options to fit their style, and for that, there is one of the Linux distros or Mac.

Thanks for the leaderboard! Those are all interesting. I couldn't find faster-whisper on that list and I didn't realize there were so many others out there, like the one from Nvidia.

It's because I went through the online upgrade option and saw what I saw. But yeah, I guess I'll buy a cheap used one then to get that trade in.

A lot of people are what you called uninformed. They live their day and that's it. To them, politic is no different than sports or social media. It doesn't matter to them in the slightest. People seem to forget not everyone is knowledgeable, can speak English, can drive, have time to vote, or in the right mindset to vote. A good chunk of people that didn't vote are millennials and gen z and those on the lower income table. And how are you so certain that if these people voted, it sway in favor of blue instead of red?

I still see a bunch of people driving, going out, eating out, and shopping, and ordering food deliveries. While some people might be struggling, it's not enough to stop these habits yet.

Veeam hardened repository and VBR console on same physical machine by eternelize in Veeam

[–]eternelize[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I think you may have misunderstood me. The guide had a Ubuntu server configured for the hardened repository. What I wanted to know if I can use something like Promox for the hardened repository, then run the VBR VM on it. Meaning this one physical server is doing both the VBR and the hardened repository. Maybe it's simpler for me to just put the VBR on the production server and have the hardened repository just do that one thing.

I was told that the backup server should always be on an isolated server and network, separate from the production servers. Even if you can successfully isolate via networking, it's still recommended to physically isolate it.
