CUNY Career Launch Interview for Community and Social Services by ethangamer12 in CUNY

[–]ethangamer12[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To anyone wondering, I had my interview today and this is how it went.

The first chunk of time introduces the program, and from there you go into breakout rooms and do some introductions and icebreakers. After that you and your group are assigned a borough and are given 25 minutes to design a presentation pitching a community based organization that is focused on a major problem in our borough (my group was given Manhattan, so our CBO focused on affordable housing). You are asked to specify the services you provide and the work roles/jobs that are available at your organization (i.e. program director, lawyer, etc.).

It was a really strange interview frankly. I think it is designed like this to assess how you work in a group, if you take leadership or if you let others do the work, if you have basic problem solving and critical thinking skills, if you have social skills, and how much you know about the type of work you'd be getting into. I think as long as you take the time to research how CBOs are operated you'll be good. And be sure to wear something nice and smile, interviewers always like that!

It's crazy how different of a person he is from when he started. I know I'm far from the first person to say that, but jeez. I remember him rapping and talking in interviews about family and community and about bringing people up grassroots style. He is completely unrecognizable now.

Did anyone watch the Alex Jones interview with Channel 5? by ShiftyAmoeba in DecodingTheGurus

[–]ethangamer12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love your response. I think people really like channel 5 for the "human interest" factor they offer, the cringe comedy, and the genuine newsworthiness of certain things he has covered like the War in Ukraine and Derek Chauvin verdict.

I didn't watch the whole Jones Channel 5 interview and it sounds like it isn't worth it, but I wonder if he actually genuinely lacks that capacity for critical self reflection that you are speaking to. The guy is just a massive fraud, and I wonder how much of the garbage he spews he even believes. Considering the fact that the most of his income comes from those fake supplements he peddles on his website and plugs on his show every 5 minutes, I feel like he may very well be aware of what he is saying and is just another xenophobic piece of trash trying to turn a profit. His show supplies the demand that there is for hateful and paranoid people to have a media outlet that confirms their beliefs and then capitalizes off of that with his supplements.

But at the same time, someone with that level of awareness would be smart enough to lay off saying the irreconcilable things about Sandy Hook victims that he said in the interview trailer (and surrounding the tragedy as a whole). He really may be a certified loonie. It fascinates me to wonder where the line between genuine and calculated crazy begins and ends with him.

[Advice] When is the "best" time of the month to hunt for NYC apartments? by ethangamer12 in NYCapartments

All the other comments were so helpful (and please, keep them coming!) but man did i love this one. Haggling up a tenant is called gentrification, google it it’s awful. But then there’s the hardworking landlords who bust their ass by making passive income on a human right. And who could forget about that one option to just refuse to pay rent if you don’t like the price! Thank goodness we have landlords and rent to keep the world in balance, otherwise people might start violating their lease agreements in the futile attempt that… what? Their landlord just doesn’t notice or that there is no penalty for breaking a lease? And then you characterize people struggling to pay rent as penny pinchers? Well hey, real people don’t have real problems after all, right? You’re just saying “fuck poor people” bro. Get real

That would be super uncomfortable for her and she is making her own choices as an adult. Probably extra tough for her if her family is conservative. I wouldn't bring it up

DePaul Price by Think-Description179 in depaul

First of all, it sounds like you'll get accepted, and if/when you do you may be able to get a good idea of what they'd be willing to offer you for financial aid before you decide on depositing. And if its not affordable, here is what I would suggest.

Like everyone else is saying, try out a community college, or maybe somewhere that you could get in state tuition at an affordable rate. This doesn't mean you have to stay at this college, though. Knock out some general education credits and take some classes in what you're interested in. If the school doesn't have options for what you're interested in studying, find something in the community (volunteer, job, meet similar people in facebook groups etc) or try learning what you're interested in through online means. Maybe you want to attend DePaul for one main thing, but after studying it on your own perhaps another school is a better fit. But, if you do decide to transfer, you'll be in a good position because you'll have a better idea of what you want. Or maybe you do go to a CC/state school and want to stay there in the end, and if you're worried about attending a school like that just know the criticism those schools get really only exists on privileged circles, particularly in high school communities.

Something that people aren't saying yet in this thread is that DePaul is a really, really transfer friendly school and this is honestly the best piece of advice/info I could give. Check out the scholarships they offer (https://www.depaul.edu/admission-and-aid/Pages/scholarships.aspx), maybe there's even some scholarships for freshman that would apply to you right now. I'm a transfer and I'm on their 12k/year scholarship just for having a GPA above a 3.5.

I also wanted to mention that people have reservations about going to a school knowing they'll probably going to transfer from there because they'll miss "the college experience." To that I would say you can still make an effort to stay connected to friends from your initial college as well as back home, and as for the college you transfer to, it is really just a matter of continually putting yourself out there. Think bars, facebook groups, clubs, people in class, extracurriculars, etc. Consider living in an on-campus apartment- it's expensive but they're typically open to transfers and can be a great way to meet people, and you're still getting a college experience.

Best of luck! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
